Biography

Entrenched in the wooded region north of New York City, GRIDFAILURE is the creation of one David Brenner (ex-Heidnik, Theologian, Dead By Dawn, The Militiamen), a solo project which was spawned in early 2016. A tortured experiment rooted in the realms of dark ambient, harsh noise, horror/soundtrack aura, and dark hardcore, the GRIDFAILURE sound continually infuses elements of industrial, jazz, punk, world music, and other genre tags, with the objective of the material to instill unavoidable paranoia, demoralizing gloom, and inescapable wrath upon the listener.

While Brenner abuses a multitude of instruments in the creation of GRIDFAILURE’s confrontational output, including guitars, bass, drums, keys, synth, electronics, harmonica, didgeridoo, violin, Theremin, and much more, the material is also driven by elements of nature and man’s scourge captured through field recordings, outdoor recording tactics, found-sound, and more. A plethora of schizophrenic self-created videos have accompanied many of the project’s records.

In addition to the creator’s own contributions, GRIDFAILURE also incorporates the works of numerous outside contributors from around the world, resulting in a mix of fully solo albums and some releases packed with guest appearances. Notable guest collaborators have included Mac Gollehon, who has performed on records by David Bowie, Miles Davis, Blondie, Onyx, Duran Duran, Madonna, and countless others, Brett Netson (Built To Spill, Caustic Resin, Snakes), Mark Deutrom (Bellringer, ex-Melvins, solo artist), Tad Doyle (TAD, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth), Leila Abdul-Rauf (Vastum, Cardinal Wyrm, Fyrhtu, Ionophore), Jeff Wilson (Chrome Waves, Abigail Williams, ex-Nachtmystium, ex-Wolvhammer), Richard Muller (The Third Kind, Vise Massacre), Benjamin Levitt (Megalophobe), Christian Molenaar (Those Darn Gnomes), BJ Allen (Full Scale Riot), and many others.

2016 saw GRIDFAILURE release its debut album, Ensuring The Bloodline Ends Here, the Further Layers Of Societal Collapse EP, a split with Never Presence Forever, and a single with Walking Bombs. 2017 saw the release of four GRIDFAILURE albums/EPs (Hostile Alchemy, Scathed, I Shall Not Survive Another Winter, and When The Lights Go Out, Vol. I), the Dendritic collaborative album with Megalophobe, and tracks on two compilations; Darker Days Ahead’s Death Season VI, and Svbterranean.net’s Razor Blades & Chocolate. So far in 2018, GRIDFAILURE released the fully solo album Irritum and the fully solo Powerdementia EP, however the unit has more than six new full-length albums/EPs as well as collaborative albums with Walking Bombs, Fyrhtu, Pornohelmut, and more nearing completion, in addition to the second fully collaborative album with Megalophobe, Tasukete, GRIDFAILURE’s first release with Nefarious Industries.

2018 saw GRIDFAILURE morph into a live unit, bringing collaborators Levitt and Muller into the fold as live members for shows across the Northeastern US, with much more in store for the stage over the months ahead with additional collaborators.

WALKING BOMBS: Sphinges, Sibling Selves And Queens Now Streaming Through Premiere At Captured Howls; Album Sees Release Friday Via Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

Walking Bombs

Sphinges, Sibling Selves And Queens, the new full-length from upstate New York’s WALKING BOMBS, sees release this Friday through Nefarious Industries, and is now streaming in its entirety through an advance stream hosted by Captured Howls.

The brainchild of one Morgan Y. Evans, WALKING BOMBS delivers an album about the riddle of identity in the modern world, the fight for authenticity and the horrors of an empathy-free online culture, society, and planet. It is about self-exploration as liberation, being multi-gender, and about defeating partial pictures that lead to often willfully badly drawn conclusions. The record features guest contributions from current/former members of Coheed And Cambria, Laterals, Cycle Sluts From Hell, The Beautiful Bastards, Surmiser, Globelamp, Gridfailure, Stormland, and more.

Captured Howls writes, “There’s an incredibly poignant sense that pops up multiple times in the lyrics in various incarnations centering on an expression featured closer to the beginning, when Morgan sings with strikingly smooth heavy vocals about an aim ‘to remind you that you’re alive.’ You might not have even known you needed such a reminder before hitting play here, but the refreshing, cohesive, and ultimately quite powerful musical weirdness on the album drives the reminder. Lyrically, the album packs a range from embracing nonbinary gender identity to anger at those tone policing or outright perpetrating violence against those who dare to stick out — and it all lands powerfully.”

Stream the new WALKING BOMBS album at Captured Howls RIGHT HERE.

Sphinges, Sibling Selves And Queens will see release on all digital formats via Nefarious Industries this Friday, August 23rd. Find preorders at Bandcamp HERE.

WALKING BOMBS’ Morgan Y. Evans, formerly of Divest and Antidote 8, is located in the Woodstock area of New York. The outfit has been in existence for nearly a decade, created by Evans as a solo or collaborative outlet for his music while between full-time bands which eventually became his primary musical focus and outlet. A cross-genre project which melds ‘90s alternative groove, folk anthems, raging antipunk, and bits of everything in between, the act propagates socio-political change, advocating for free thought and equal rights. The spirit of classic Americana singer-songwriters fueled with an energetic punk pulse is centered around Evans’ penetrating, melodic vocals.

Having yielded multiple independent albums, singles, an EP, collaborations, and more in the time since its inception, most recently, WALKING BOMBS released the diverse Suicide By Citizenship collaborative album with labelmate act Gridfailure, which featured musicians from the likes of Tad, Kylesa, All Out War, Built To Spill, Surmiser, Globelamp, Full Scale Riot, Megalophobe, and more. Just a few months later, the outfit presents Sphinges, Sibling Selves And Queens.

The Sphinges, Sibling Selves And Queens album was recorded in Saugerties, New York, with Morgan Y. Evans performing vocals and bass, with contributions of acoustic guitar and trombone. The record was engineered, mixed, and mastered by producer Jay Andersen (Surmiser) who performs guitars, drums, and keyboards. The record also features guest performances from Dava She Wolf (Star & Dagger, Cycle Sluts From Hell), Alison Babylon (The Beautiful Bastards, Oblivion Grin), Elizabeth “Le Fey” Gomez (Globelamp), Jem Violet, Nate Kelley (ex-Coheed And Cambria, Shabutie, Laterals, PPSP), David Brenner (Gridfailure), Kentro, and Justin Pierrot (Stormland), and is completed with cover art by Julie Catona (Future Illustrations).

With the release of the album upon the public, WALKING BOMBS’ creator Morgan Y. Evans offers, “This record is funny in that it is one of my most ‘real’ and also one of the most ‘escapist’ at the same time. I mean, the first lyric of the album is talking to a hallucinatory duck about the ‘60s and astrology and how the world is spinning through space, so everything is always kind of absurdly surreal in life. Overall, the album is about how regardless of what is going on we have to kind of work through the mysteries of self and try to lift one another up, but also keep our boundaries when being pushed around or shit-on. Learning how to be your own new best friend or who you’ve wanted to be but maybe held back, as well. In that sense, it also has some very real issues discussed. Trans military rights, public perception, self-determination and multi-gender issues, hateful religious fundamentalism versus real open-minded love, music scene backstabbing, tone policing, the daily grind, and the dangers but also liberations in counter-culture pseudo-vampirism all get touched on. This one also features a lot of friends I have known for many, many years – a blessing. It is also dedicated to several various genre artists and friends who died during the making of the album, which only added to my continued drive to try to tackle different sounds and make use of the lifetime I have been given to not hold myself back creating within the lines.”

GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE: Heavy Blog Is Heavy Premieres “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia” Video; Tasukete Out Now Via Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

New York solo/experimental outfits GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE deliver an explosively demented new video for “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia,” found on their second collaborative album, Tasukete, which saw release through Nefarious Industries in late 2018. The visual accompaniment to the rabid musical concoction infiltrates the public domain through the web portal known as Heavy Blog Is Heavy.

Tasukete – Japanese for “help me,” as seen in The Exorcist – was performed, recorded, and mixed by the artists at GRIDFAILURE’s The Compound in Rockland County and MEGALOPHOBE’s Forked Audio in Brooklyn, and sees the pair employing electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drums, keys, accordion, harmonica, and more, with a bombardment of vocal styles. Levitt’s brother Rob Levitt performs on several of the tracks, and the cover art was handled by Paul Tierman and David Brenner.

The video for “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia” was filmed and edited by Brenner with additional footage by Friederike Schüür and brings the song’s gnarled and bizarre street beat-meets-nuclear meltdown nature to dizzying new levels. The experimenters offer, “While this is one of the most straightforward rock/groove-driven songs from either GRIDFAILURE or MEGALOPHOBE, the tension level is high, and the psychosis levels are uncharted. With the transference of these factors into a visual format, we feel that our intention to create a similar, if not magnified, result, has been met. We encourage maximum density and volume when attempting to view the results of this research.”

Heavy Blog Is Heavy is hosting the video’s premiere, offering, “…GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE step away from noise and industrial clichés and deliver a troubling, dizzying multimedia assault on all six of your senses… each act bringing distress and terror to life with voice, instruments, and an unflinching disregard for keeping their audience comfortable. If you’re tired of the same Aphex Twin remixes, and Merzbow isn’t weird enough for you anymore, you’d be doing yourself a gratitude by going deeper into the vortex of disillusionment these two acts thrive in.”

Endure GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE’s “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia” video at Heavy Blog Is Heavy RIGHT HERE.

Tasukete is out now through Nefarious Industries on all digital platforms and via eco-wallet CD-R. Place orders at the label webshop HEREMEGALOPHOBE’s Bandcamp HERE, and GRIDFAILURE’s Bandcamp HERE. Also see the previously released album video for “Panic Day” HERE.

Levitt continues to join Brenner’s GRIDFAILURE live lineup, and both GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE have new material nearing completion. Stand by for more updates on both acts to see release in the weeks ahead.

“…a noisy nightmare, a soundscape to the struggle of the soul in the contemporary urban climate, the sound of late capitalism trapped in a spit bubble and a discarded piece of chewing gum on a subway platform… This isn’t music as much as it is Cinema Verite as imagined by two auteurs who’ve been raised on a steady diet of Wolf Eyes and the sounds of Hell’s Kitchen in the early 1980s.” – PopMatters

“…mind-melter of abrasive noise, dizzying atmospheres, pseudo jazz instrumentation, and psychotic vocals. It’s like being trapped in a funhouse while under the influence of illicit substances.” – Svbterranean

“Twisted and dark, GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE have an intimate understanding of the horrors of the human race. There is something wonderfully eerie about this record. The way it ebbs and flows, darting around the corners of your reality. This is the sort of horrified nonsense that Luigi Russolo must have envisioned when he first started to refine this kind of music in the 1910’s. On the cutting edge and unafraid to push well beyond the sanity of the common man there is something almost Lovecraftian about this murk. It writhes darkly and greedily, begging you to come forth and suck at the unholy blasphemous teat.” – Two Guys Metal Reviews

“Experimental? Dark ambient? Power electronics? Where are the same riffs we’ve heard dozens of times from hundreds of bands? How am I supposed to mosh to this? Words are scary! It’s weird! It’s different! We can’t have that! Well I’m here to say that, yes, we can, and I’ve got two experimental noise artists to help me prove my point.” – Toilet Ov Hell

“…this time around it’s more urgent and mechanical. Heavily effected vocals, industrial elements, ambiance, feedback and noise swirl amidst seemingly random song structures… While mostly dissonant and avant-garde, there are semi-traditional moments…” – Heavy Music Headquarters

EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE: Trip Over This Video For GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE’s “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia” – Heavy Blog Is Heavy

“The music video we’re debuting for you today couldn’t be any further from your local bands’ metalcore warehouse performance clip. Pairing acid-washed visuals with their collaborative digital hellscape “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia”, experimental acts GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE step away from noise and industrial clichés and deliver a troubling, dizzying multimedia assault on all six of your senses. This doesn’t have a content warning, but if you’ve just micro-dosed, please take care. […] Unearthly bleeps, cheeps, and creeps dance over a somewhat primitive drum loop and harsh, grinding vocals call out, seemingly from this realm and the next. Multi-faceted is a term you could use when describing this. Or you could just scream “tasukete” and hope someone nearby understands and can assist you.” – Heavy Blog Is Heavy

GRIDFAILURE Moans of a Thousand Encroaching Illnesses with “Sixth Mass Extinction Skulduggery I” – The Covenant

GRIDFAILURE is sickness given aural form as the experimental project of madman Dave Brenner (ex-Theologian), and marks a departure from his death industrial treatments in favor of hallucinogenic sound collages bringing to mind legends like Nurse With Wound, early Current 93, or a number of experimental film soundtrack composers from Japan or Italy. Compared to his first album however, Sixth Mass Extinction Skulduggery I takes on a much more straightforward, vocal industrial noise approach with a general emotion of hatred and bitterness pervading the record. […] Each track is meant to reflect a different stage in the decay of the human race, realistically reflecting the current events facing humanity today… This adds a very welcome element of diversity to the recording as it truly feels like a story unraveling, though the tone is very much consistently dark from the very beginning of “Sandy” up to the inevitable cliffhanger “Exsanguination of the Utopians”.” – The Covenant

GRIDFAILURE: Cvlt Nation Premieres “Exsanguination Of The Utopians” Video; Solo Outfit Confirmed To Score Horror Short Film HARMLESS – Earsplit Compound

Lower Hudson Valley solo outfit GRIDFAILURE has released a new video for “Exsanguination Of The Utopians,” the closing track on one of the unit’s recent albums, Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I — the first in a five-album series —  which saw release through Nefarious Industries in February. Cvlt Nation is hosting the exclusive premiere of the video alongside an interview which divulges more new upcoming releases and actions from the unit.

The “Exsanguination Of The Utopians” video was filmed and directed by GRIDFAILURE’s David Brenner, with additional footage of filmed by Friederike Schüür. The song itself is soaked with effects-laden accordion from regular live and album collaborator Benjamin Levitt (Megalophobe), with Brenner providing vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, violin, xylophone, chains, chimes, field recordings, and more.

Cvlt Nation writes in part with the video’s unveiling, “The Earth cries out. The Geotrauma is echoed in human suffering and violence. Our every utterance and effort at progress goes stifled and unheard. Sometimes, mere heavy metal feels inadequate to express the true horror of this world. Reality is infinitely complex and requires great deals of abstraction to communicate its terrible truths. This is where GRIDFAILURE comes into play. A leviathan of noise and power electronics, industrial drones and field recordings, GRIDFAILURE brings the schizo-horrors shambling into the burning light for all to hear.”

See GRIDFAILURE’s “Exsanguination Of The Utopians” video at Cvlt Nation RIGHT HERE.

Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I is out now on all digital platforms through Nefarious Industries – via Bandcamp HERE, iTunes HERE, and Spotify HERE – with a short-run physical version to be issued shortly. Also see the video for the album’s “Post-Attack Habitat” HERE.

GRIDFAILURE is also completing the score to HARMLESS, an upcoming independent short horror movie, created by several writers associated with Decibel Magazine (Andrew Bonazelli as screenwriter and Sean Frasier as director) along with Manuel Alarcón as cinematographer and assistant director. It’s fully self-financed and Brenner is solely scoring the film. Watch for further updates on HARMLESS to be issued shortly.

GRIDFAILURE completed its first short tour at the beginning of May, supporting friends, Portland, Maine-based blackened rock killers Zud. This tour saw regular live collaborators Benjamin Levitt (Megalophobe) and Richard Muller (The Third Kind, Vise Massacre) joining Brenner for two shows, and Brenner performing the first solo sets for the outfit for two more. The outfit is currently booking other new shows into the summer months. Subscribe to GRIDFAILURE’s YouTube to see new live sets, official videos, and much more RIGHT HERE.

Watch for updates on GRIDFAILURE’s other new recordings including the nearly completed Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery II album, several other new collaborative titles, and much more to see release throughout the summer.

GRIDFAILURE Live:
6/07/2019 Ceremony224 – Brooklyn, NY w/ Reg Bloor, Willzyx, Duskseeker [info]

GRIDFAILURE’s Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery concept series depicts a grim, rapidly approaching reality, the series’ five titles culminating tales of nature’s decimating wrath in response to humanity’s provocation, and the effects on our civilization. The series will include Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery III, and III, and will culminate with the two massive albums Teeth Collection and Drought Stick, which document random stories from the final days of the human species.

Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I delivers over fifty-two minutes of GRIDFAILURE’s cavernous, effects-drenched terror, merging elements of harsh industrial, world music, pensive drone, dark hardcore, and cinematic horror. Elements of the record were written in times of blackout during Superstorm Sandy, and other elements were recorded outdoors in extreme weather events. Conceived, written, executed, recorded, mixed, and completed with art by GRIDFAILURE‘s David Brenner, Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I also features contributions from Joy Von Spain (Eye Of Nix, To End It All), Pete Tsakiris, Greg Meisenberg (A Fucking Elephant, Maid Myriad), Benjamin Levitt (Megalophobe, Gridfailure live), BJ Allen (Full Scale Riot), and Christopher Henry (Humans Etcetera, Fuck Your Birthday). The album was mastered by Dan Emery at Black Matter Mastering (Kool Keith, Krieg, Thetan).

Review: WALKING BOMBS & GRIDFAILURE, Suicide by Citizenship (Nefarious Industries, 2019) – No Echo

“Four out of eight songs in and the main note I want to present is that while there may not be clear cut connections between every song, this record seems to have a natural cohesion in how it is sequenced which is not easy. If you add in the experimental nature of David Brenner (GRIDFAILURE) and Morgan Y. Evans (WALKING BOMBS) musical output as well as the varied collaborators they worked with on this release, I think it’d be fair for some to think any flow or cohesion in the material would be impossible but Suicide by Citizenship is a uniquely unified experience that I think is meant to throw the listener as off balance as it is to pull them in.” – No Echo

WALKING BOMBS and GRIDFAILURE: New Noise Magazine Premieres “Bare Shores Bleed” Video; Song Features Brett Netson And Other Guests + Suicide By Citizenship Out Next Week Via Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

GRIDFAILURE-WALKING-BOMBS-2018-Bohemosphere-3-1024x768

From their impending fully collaborative musical experiment, Suicide By Citizenship, New York solo outfits WALKING BOMBS and GRIDFAILURE present a new video for the emotive eco-collapse movement, “Bare Shores Bleed.” The video makes is public debut through a premiere at New Noise Magazine as the album nears release through Nefarious Industries next week.

“Bare Shores Bleed” sees WALKING BOMBS’ Morgan Y. Evans on vocals and bass, GRIDFAILURE’s David Brenner on vocals, guitar, electronics, harmonica, effects, and field recordings, album performer and producer Jay Andersen (Surmiser) on drums, and features a cast of guest contributions, including guitar from Brett Netson (Built To Spill, Snakes), vocals from Elizabeth Le Fey (Globelamp), and accordion from Benjamin Levitt (Megalophobe). The video was directed and filmed by Brenner.

With the “Bare Shores Bleed” premiere, Evans offers, “Dave mainly wrote this one, but I was really stoked Elizabeth and I sang on it together as the environment is important to both of us. She got me taking care of my health again and has been vegetarian for fifteen years. I also love the nature of where we live in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate, New York and hate that the world is threatened by the careless march of humanity. Also shout out to Jay for spending extra time on mixing this one as there was so much going on. It is thrilling to hear Brett’s chaotic guitar swells, which remind me of nature’s wrath.

Brenner offers, “Our planet is in peril. We see some of the most devastating ecological disasters happening right in front of our eyes, we watch species go extinct daily, we clear millions of acres of woodlands yearly, and each of us throws thousands of pounds of plastic into the planet each year. We have an administration who hires rapists of the EPA to run it, and legions of ‘Flat Earthers’ and ‘coal rollers’ simply defying science and common sense. Political affiliations aside, we all need air and water. Our planet is the highest priority to all of us, and it saddens me when I see so much abuse of it every day.

Suicide By Citizenship is an album created to challenge its own creators with the intent of combining sounds from two outfits located on polar opposite ends of the underground music spectrum. The record blends a wealth of genres into a dystopian alloy of improvised jams, rife with discontent for the contemporary state of American politics, and more specifically, the current administration’s actions and policies.

In 2016, Evans invited Brenner to collaborate on WALKING BOMBS’ “Demagogue,” an outspoken punk anthem aimed at our 45th president, to which GRIDFAILURE provided a backdrop of chaos and vocals. The unlikely pairing of acts on the track quickly became something both wanted to explore further, penning ideas for a fully collaborative release. They met in late 2017 at Bohemosphere Studios in Saugerties, New York, with studio owner and Evans’ musical counterpart, Jay Andersen. The three tore through several improv jams and that afternoon had a solid structure of what would become Suicide By Citizenship. Through several similar jams over the next few months with the three vagabonds each performing multiple instruments, additional material was recorded by Brenner at The Compound.

Hudson Valley, New York solo outfits WALKING BOMBS and GRIDFAILURE are preparing to release their diverse, fully collaborative musical experiment, Suicide By Citizenship, through Nefarious Industries in late April. With the record nearing release, the new single “Supply And Demand Of The American Soul” has been premiered through PopMatters, as preorders for the CD are posted.

Conceived by WALKING BOMBS’ Morgan Y. Evans and GRIDFAILURE’s David Brenner who created the album with producer Jay Andersen (Surmiser), Suicide By Citizenship is an album created to challenge its own creators with the intent of combining sounds from two outfits located on polar opposite ends of the underground music spectrum. The record blends a wealth of genres into a dystopian alloy of improvised jams, rife with discontent for the contemporary state of American politics, and more specifically, the current administration’s actions and policies.

Suicide By Citizenship features guest contributions from Thomas Andrew Doyle (Tad, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth), Laura Pleasants (Kylesa, The Discussion), Mike Score (All Out War, Below The Frost), Brett Netson (Built To Spill, Earth, Snakes), Elizabeth Le Fey (Globelamp), BJ Allen (Full Scale Riot), Benjamin Levitt (Megalophobe), and more. The audio was mastered by Anderson and the record completed with artwork by Brenner.

“Supply And Demand Of The American Soul” sees Evans performing lead vocals and trombone, Brenner providing background vocals, guitar, theremin, and effects, and Andersen playing drums and synth. The track captures the core essence of Suicide By Citizenship, a melting pot of Americana, jazz, and noise, through the lens of William S. Burroughs, Upton Sinclair, and George Orwell.

PopMatters notes the single is, “five minutes of lamenting a vanishing way of life… This is the arrival of a new weird, something that moves beyond the traditional boundaries of noise/avant-garde/experimental and toward something that is utterly hypnotic and hallucinatory in its sense of despair and the death grips of hopelessness.”

Hear WALKING BOMBS & GRIDFAILURE’s “Supply And Demand Of The American Soul” only through PopMatters at THIS LOCATION.

Nefarious Industries will release Suicide By Citizenship on eco-wallet CD and all digital platforms on April 26th. Find preorders at the label webshop HERE and via Bandcamp where “Armchair Expert” is streaming HERE and HERE.

Watch for additional audio and video premieres and more to be issued in the weeks ahead.

GRIDFAILURE: Heathen Harvest Premieres “Post-Attack Habitat” Video; Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I Out Now Through Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

GRIDFAILURE - Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I

A video for New York-based GRIDFAILURE’s “Post-Attack Habitat” has been issued through an exclusive premiere at Heathen Harvest. Created for the outfit’s recently-released Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I full-length, out now through Nefarious Industries, the video presents a brief glimpse into the concept behind the album, the first in a five-album series from the ominous outfit.

Debuting the “Post-Attack Habitat” video, Heathen Harvest writes in part, “Brenner is increasingly working in the realm of high tension, and this new video is another step in that increasingly blossoming direction.  Something about ‘Post-Attack Habitat’ has a nineties-throwback feel to it, probably nestled somewhere between the fish-eye lens and the high-tempo overstimulation of apocalyptic visions…”

Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery is available digitally through Nefarious Industries; place orders at Bandcamp HERE, iTunes HERE, and Spotify HERE, as well as all other digital platforms. Watch for a limited physical version, additional videos from the album, and more to be issued in the weeks ahead.

Nefarious Industries will also release Suicide By Citizenship, a fully collaborative musical experiment from GRIDFAILURE and WALKING BOMBS, featuring contributions from Thomas Andrew Doyle (TAD, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth), Laura Pleasants (Kylesa, The Discussion), Mike Score (All Out War, Below The Frost), Brett Netson (Built To Spill, Earth, Snakes), Elizabeth Le Fey (Globelamp), BJ Allen (Full Scale Riot), Benjamin Levitt (Megalophobe), and more. Mastered by Anderson who also plays on the album, the record was completed with photography/artwork by Brenner. See a brief trailer HERE.

GRIDFAILURE plays Brooklyn this Sunday, March 17th, and has booked a four-date Springtime In The Abyss Pt. 2 tour with their allies in Zud for the first week of May. Watch for additional live actions to post shortly.

5/04/2019 Atlas Brew Works – Washington, DC w/ Voarm, Radamanthys [info]

GRIDFAILURE’s Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery concept series depicts a grim, rapidly-approaching reality, the series’ five titles culminating tales of nature’s decimating wrath in response to humanity’s provocation, and the effects on our civilization. The series will include Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery III, and III, and will culminate with the two massive albums Teeth Collection and Drought Stick, which document random stories from the final days of the human species.

As resources are depleted, so are morals, and as monolithic storms ravage the planet, neighbors turn on one another, and once war and uprising decimate the population, survivors are left to slaughter for survival in a diseased and polluted wasteland aftermath. Sources of uncontaminated energy, food, and water are scarce on the grim sphere, and the species’ reliance on technology has left most humans helpless to do anything but wait to be pillaged and consumed by marauding outlander factions or simply perish in the unforgiving climate. Themes of cannibalism, disease, delirium, revenge, scourge, warfare, and general underhandedness are written from haphazard points of view within the withering human race in the multi-release series, which infuse heavy elements of tribal/and percussion with post-industrial and mechanical beats resembling a biomechanical hybrid, deploying a communal aura of woe and rage.

WALKING BOMBS & GRIDFAILURE To Release Suicide By Citizenship Featuring Members Of TAD, Kylesa, All Out War, Built To Spill, And More Via Nefarious Industries; Trailer Posted – Earsplit Compound

GRIDFAILURE & WALKING BOMBS 2018 Bohemosphere

Nefarious Industries confirms the April release of Suicide By Citizenship, a fully collaborative musical experiment from Hudson Valley, New York solo outfits/collaborator magnets WALKING BOMBS and GRIDFAILURE. The album features guest contributions from a spectrum of artists from the likes of TAD, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, Kylesa, All Out War, Built To Spill, Globelamp, Full Scale Riot, Megalophobe, and more.

Incepted by WALKING BOMBS’ Morgan Y. Evans and GRIDFAILURE’s David Brenner who created the album with producer Jay Andersen (Surmiser), Suicide By Citizenship is an album created to challenge its own creators with the intent of combining sounds from two outfits located on polar opposite ends of the underground music spectrum. Evans states, “Dave and Jay have been stalwart pals in the music scene of mine for ages, so it was awesome to capture this moment in time with them sonically, to say nothing of the other killer guests. This album to me represents people’s faith in the American Dream being exploited, ground up and spit out by gerrymandering, self-important Christo-fascists and unchecked capitalist greed. It’s a total farce to think corruption won’t run rampant in a society with no checks and balances.”

Brenner offers, “While our styles are vastly different, when we got into a room together and hit record things just happened organically. Three friends came in with the concept only; absolutely everything else musically and lyrically bloomed from that. Our planet is in peril, the party governing our country is a disgrace, tensions and turmoil amongst us are out of control, and we’re being divided further apart every day. This album is meant as a cumulative human cry for unification and progression, and a warning shot to the perpetrators.”

GRIDFAILURE: Captured Howls Premieres Title Track From Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I; Concept Album Series Launches Next Week Via Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

GRIDFAILURE - Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I

As New York’s GRIDFAILURE marks its third anniversary this month, the outfit prepares to launch the multi-album Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery concept series through Nefarious Industries next week. With the release of Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I days from release, investigative music blog Captured Howls debuts a new track from the record which features guest vocals from Joy Von Spain (Eye Of Nix, To End It All).

The first of five albums in the sequence, Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I delivers over fifty-two minutes of GRIDFAILURE’s cavernous effects-drenched terror, merging elements of harsh industrial, diseased world music, suffocating drone, and cinematic horror vibes. Many elements of the record were written in times of blackout – including lyrics and themes written during a long blackout during Superstorm Sandy– and elements recorded during open air sessions during extreme storms including outdoors, helping embody the outfit’s moniker itself.

As the site’s inaugural track premiere, Captured Howls has premiered “Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I: Survivor’s Remorse,” noting of the track, “The piece opens with haunting vocals from To End It All’s Joy Von Spain before launching into a relentless build into misery driven by a straightforward musical undercurrent that’s been mangled before it reaches the listener. Some prominent elements at work here at one point no doubt sounded familiarly pleasant — or at least could be taken that way — but now, they’ve been sent through a sonic hell of our own making. That immersive hellish feeling pervades the track to the point of not being easily dismissed — it’s as if it sneaks up on the listener’s back and sinks its claws, then marches them right off the edge into a very tangible madness.”

Hear GRIDFAILURE’s “Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I: Survivor’s Remorse” via Captured Howls at THIS LOCATION.

The album series was conceived, written, executed, recorded, mixed, and completed with hand drawn art by GRIDFAILURE’s David Brenner who provides vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, electric, analog, and acoustic drums, keys, synth, harmonica, violin, theremin, field recordings, and more. Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery I also features contributions which sculpt the album into curious new dimensions, with bass from Greg Meisenberg (A Fucking Elephant, Maid Myriad, Tombs-live), vocals from Joy Von Spain (Eye Of Nix, To End It All), accordion from Benjamin Levitt (Megalophobe, Gridfailure-live), guitar from Pete Tsakiris, ukulele from Christopher Henry (Humans Etcetera, Fuck Your Birthday), and drums from BJ Allen (Full Scale Riot). The album was mastered by Dan Emery at Black Matter Mastering (Buzzov*en, Kool Keith, Dwarves, Krieg, AxCx.).

Sixth Mass-Extinction Skulduggery will see release on February 15th through Nefarious Industries, who will also release the other titles in the series. Find digital preorders at Bandcamp where lead track “Sandy” featuring guest accordion by Benjamin Levitt, bass from Greg Meisenberg, and ukulele from Christopher Henry is streaming HERE.

Watch for audio and video premieres from the album to see release in the days ahead and updates on the other installments in the series to follow.

GRIDFAILURE: Sixth Mass-Extinction Skullduggery I – Cadaver Garden

“Forever pushing the envelope and forever ushering forth noise of the utmost quality, GRIDFAILURE offers perhaps their most ambitious album yet. Through the fifty plus minutes of run time, each track traps you in a world that is and has been ravaged by nature’s unbridled decimating wrath that ultimately leaves humanity on the brink of utter destruction. Without light, without hope and with plenty of harrowing minutes that tick off the clock, GRIDFAILURE provides you with a record that is truly striking and perception altering.” – Cadaver Garden

GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE: Tasukete – Sea of Tranquility

“A cry for help within the search to make sense of the strangest parts of our experience. Put another way, this is a deep dive into the strangest possible locations. Nothing is safe and our perceptions are always compromised. If you’ve never heard either of these bands before, prepare to cry out for some help. Both bands create music that can only be called experimental, psychotic, and confused noise. […] Give yourself time to adjust to the new and unfamiliar sounds and then just see what happens. If you give it a chance, you’ll find that the music gets more interesting and more engaging as it goes. There’s a method to all the strangeness and it can reward patient listening.” – Sea of Tranquility

GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE: Toilet Ov Hell Premieres “Panic Day” Video; Tasukete Collaboration By Two New York Solo Acts Out Now On Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE Panic Day

Tasukete – the second collaborative album by New York experimental/solo outfits GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE – was released via Nefarious Industries in October, and now a new video for the album’s tweaked “Panic Day” has been premiered through Toilet Ov Hell.

MEGALOPHOBE describes “Panic Day” as, “An acoustic introduction to sustained anxiety. Floor toms beaten with abandon, obsessively repeated guitar loops, throat abusing imperatives to remain calm — what’s not calming about that? Recorded in the lounge at GRIDFAILURE’s The Compound, with both vocal tracks added later on, we stripped away almost all of the big electronics and amplifiers present on most of our other songs in favor of the physicality of acoustic instruments and tension. ‘Will it be okay?’ Yeah, probably not.”

GRIDFAILURE exposes on the video for the song, “We shot this twice. We had initially filmed it on MEGALOPHOBE’s Forked Audio’s roof in Bushwick in June, with an end-of-days 110-degree heat index. However, I apparently discarded or incinerated that footage, so we re-shot it one afternoon in October; I filmed clips on my way through the Bronx and Queens in to Ben’s joint in Brooklyn where we filmed most of this madness on the roof. Again.”

Toilet Ov Hell provides, “The mixture of electronics and acoustics blends both the traditional and experimental music worlds perfectly. The atmospheric tone of the song combined with the frantic video footage makes for a terrifyingly beautiful experience.”

See GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE’s “Panic Day” video at Toilet Ov Hell RIGHT HERE.

Tasukete is out now through Nefarious Industries on all digital platforms and via eco-wallet CD, available at the label webshop HERE, at MEGALOPHOBE’s Bandcamp HERE and GRIDFAILURE’s Bandcamp HERE.

Levitt continues to join Brenner’s live lineup of GRIDFAILURE, with more being plotted for the fall months. MEGALOPHOBE and collaborative live sets for the Tasukete record will be organized in the weeks ahead.

GRIDFAILURE Live:
12/08/2018 TBA – w/ Zud, Black Mica
12/09/2018 Sun Tiki Studios – Portland, ME w/ Zud, Nuclear Bootz, Black Mica [info]

Tasukete began to take form not long after GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE’s first joint album, Dendritic, released in early 2017, the album title (Japanese for “help me”) ripped from the language lab in The Exorcist. Tasukete was performed, recorded, and mixed at GRIDFAILURE’s The Compound in Rockland County and MEGALOPHOBE’s Forked Audio in Brooklyn, and sees the two artists employing electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drums, keys, accordion, harmonica, and more, with a bombardment of vocal styles. Levitt’s brother Rob Levitt performs on several of the tracks, and the cover art was handled by Paul Tierman and David Brenner.

GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE: Tasukete Album Review – Heavy Music Headquarters

“…this time around it’s more urgent and mechanical. Heavily effected vocals, industrial elements, ambiance, feedback and noise swirl amidst seemingly random song structures, with tracks ranging from two to nearly nine minutes. While mostly dissonant and avant-garde, there are semi-traditional moments on tracks like “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia” that quickly dissipate and the madness resumes.” – Heavy Music Headquarters

GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE: Tasukete Collaboration By New York Solo Outfits Streaming At Avant Music News; Album Out Friday Through Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE Bushwick Panic Day shoot COMBO

This Friday, Nefarious Industries will release the unhinged Tasukete, the second collaborative album by New York experimental/solo outfits GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE, and first release from either band through the label’s diverse roster. Ahead of its official uncaging, the entire album is now streaming through investigative music website Avant Music News.

GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE’s first joint album, Dendritic, was released in early 2017, and it was not long after that when Tasukete began to form. During recording sessions for another album, some of the material became too deranged for the concept and was quickly corralled into a separate wing of the testing facility and reclassified as Tasukete– Japanese for “help me” – as seen in the language lab in The Exorcist. While Dendritic bore spacious, nature-oriented movements flooded with field recordings, Tasukete runs rampant with unhinged confusion, contorted executions, and explosive self-immolation through strenuous psychosis, as the two artists treat themselves as self-crash-test dummies strapped into their own torqued contraptions.

Created through several sessions in 2017 and early 2018, Tasukete was performed, recorded, and mixed by the two soloists at GRIDFAILURE’s The Compound in Rockland County and MEGALOPHOBE’s Forked Audio in Brooklyn. With eight tracks ranging between two and nine minutes in length, the two artists employ a barrage of random recording tactics, capturing the abuse of electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drums, keys, synth, accordion, harmonica, and more, with a bombardment of vocal styles, all generally wired with enough effect to dam the Hudson. Levitt’s brother Rob Levitt performs on several of the tracks, and the cover art was handled by Paul Tierman and Brenner.

Stream GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE’s entire Tasukete album via Avant Music News now at THIS LOCATION.

Nefarious Industries will release Tasukete on all digital platforms and via limited-run eco-wallet CD this Friday, October 5th. Find preorders at the label webshop HERE, and digital preorders at MEGALOPHOBE’s Bandcamp HERE and GRIDFAILURE’s Bandcamp HERE.

Watch for several videos from Tasukete to be issued over the coming weeks.

The connections between these two units run essentially to the core of both. Shortly after the genesis of GRIDFAILUREin 2016, creator David Brenner and friend Benjamin Levitt hooked up a random recording session, which spawned not only contributions from Levitt to several GRIDFAILURE releases, it also cemented MEGALOPHOBE as an entity, and led to the first collaborative album, Dendritic, self-released in April 2017. MEGALOPHOBE has since released its eponymous debut EP which included contributions from Brenner, GRIDFAILURE has morphed into a live entity which includes Levitt, and the two have been constantly at work on a plethora of new collaborative material.

Levitt continues to join Brenner’s live lineup of GRIDFAILURE, with more being plotted for the fall months. MEGALOPHOBE and collaborative live sets for the Tasukete record will be organized in the weeks ahead.

GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE: PopMatters Premieres Title Track From Tasukete; Second Collaborative Album By New York Solo Outfits Nears Release Via Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE - Tasukete

Tasukete, the second collaborative album from New York solo outfits GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE and the first title from either act to see release under the diverse Nefarious Industries banner, will be set loose upon the public in early October. PopMatters is now streaming the record’s title track ahead of its street date.

Created in several sessions in 2017 and early 2018, Tasukete was fully performed, recorded, and mixed by GRIDFAILURE’s David Brenner at The Compound in Rockland County, New York and MEGALOPHOBE’s Benjamin Levitt at Forked Audio in Brooklyn, New York. Levitt’s brother Rob Levitt performs on several of the tracks, and the cover art was handled by Paul Tierman and David Brenner.

With the premiere of title track of the record, the artists offer, “On the song ‘Tasukete,’ we pour layers of processed field recordings and mistreated electronics into a tense four minutes and twenty seconds of madness. The lyrics, a twisted cry for help referencing the translation of the title (Japanese for ‘help me’), are delivered by both of us, our vocals bent and battered into near oblivion. We felt that as the title track, it should represent the eclectic character of the rest of the album and it manages to do that while, fittingly, it resembles none of the rest of it. As the industrial rhythm materializes and then melts down and oozes into the track’s end, it reveals itself as the perfect song to accompany a total breakdown; play it at work and see for yourself.”

PopMatters writes in part, “’Tasukete’, the song itself is a noisy nightmare, a soundscape to the struggle of the soul in the contemporary urban climate, the sound of late capitalism trapped in a spit bubble and a discarded piece of chewing gum on a subway platform… This isn’t music as much as it is Cinema Verite as imagined by two auteurs who’ve been raised on a steady diet of Wolf Eyes and the sounds of Hell’s Kitchen in the early 1980s.”

Nefarious Industries will release Tasukete on all digital platforms and via limited-run eco-wallet CD on October 5th. Find preorders at the label webshop HERE, and stream the first single “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia” with preorders at GRIDFAILURE’s Bandcamp HERE or MEGALOPHOBE’s Bandcamp HERE,

The connections between these two rogue units run essentially to the core of both. Shortly after the genesis of GRIDFAILURE in 2016, creator David Brenner and friend Benjamin Levitt hooked up a random recording session, which spawned not only contributions from Levitt to several GRIDFAILURE releases, it also cemented MEGALOPHOBE as an entity, and led to the first collaborative album, Dendritic, self-released in April 2017. MEGALOPHOBE has since released its eponymous debut EP which included contributions from Brenner, GRIDFAILURE has morphed into a live entity which includes Levitt, and the two have been constantly at work on a plethora of new collaborative material.

GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE’s unplanned first joint album, Dendritic, was released in early 2017, and it was not long after that the material which would evolve into their second unplanned album was birthed. During recording sessions for another upcoming collaboration, some of the material became too deranged for the planned concept and was quickly corralled into a separate wing of the testing facility and reclassified as Tasukete – Japanese for “help me” – as seen in the language lab in the movie The Exorcist.

GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE Explore the Frayed Ends of Sanity on “Tasukete” (premiere) – PopMatters

“A noisy nightmare, a soundscape to the struggle of the soul in the contemporary urban climate, the sound of late capitalism trapped in a spit bubble and a discarded piece of chewing gum on a subway platform. It all comes together there, in the moments before we are hurled into a long tunnel. In the end, there is a light. It either carries us into the fires of our eternal tormentor or into the arms of a benevolent being who will coddle our baby souls with the sounds of Neurosis and King Diamond for the entirety of our afterlife. This isn’t music as much as it is Cinema Verite as imagined by two auteurs who’ve been raised on a steady diet of Wolf Eyes and the sounds of Hell’s Kitchen in the early 1980s.” – PopMatters

GRIDFAILURE + MEGALOPHOBE: Tasukete – Two Guys Metal Reviews

“There is a sort of existential pain that drives the work of these two artists and their willingness to be grating and oppressive thrills me and terrifies the shit out of my cat. That’s a huge part of the appeal of noise though, especially how these guys do it, it’s about leaving you with your skin crawling. Tasukete is a record that does exactly that. It’s the sort of music that makes you ask yourself why this type of music was even created in the first place. But because of its sheer devilishness you know, you know you were meant to succumb to this glorious fucked up oppression. Twisted and dark, GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE have an intimate understanding of the horrors of the human race.” – Two Guys Metal Reviews

GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE: Tasukete Collaborative Album To See Release Via Nefarious Industries In October; “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia” Streaming At Svbterranean – Earsplit Compound

GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE Bushwick Panic Day shoot COMBO

New York-based solo experimental outfits GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE have recoalesced to dispatch their second fully collaborative album, Tasukete. The album will be released via Nefarious Industries in early October, and the album’s spastic “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia” has been debuted at Svbterranean.

Set for release less than a year-and-a-half after GRIDFAILURE and MEGALOPHOBE’s first joint album, Dendritic, the Tasukete record was another unplanned collaborative album from the two outfits. During recording sessions for a different impending collaboration, some of the material became too schizophrenic for the concept and was quickly corralled into a separate wing of the testing facility. These harvested accidents were reclassified under Tasukete – Japanese for “help me” – as seen in the language lab in the movie The Exorcist. While Dendritic bore spacious, nature-oriented movements flooded with field recordings, Tasukete is on the deranged opposite end of the spectrum; an album ripe with confusion, unhinged with contorted visions, and explosive self-immolation through strenuous psychosis, as the two artists treat themselves as self-crash-test dummies strapped into their own torqued contraptions.

Tasukete was self-recorded, mixed, and mastered, created in several sessions at MEGALOPHOBE’s Benjamin Levitt’s Forked Audio in Brooklyn and GRIDFAILURE’s David Brenner’s The Compound in Rockland County. Employing a barrage of random recording tactics, eight tracks ranging from two to nine minutes in length are created through the abuse of electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drums, keys, synth, accordion, harmonica, and various random instruments, as well as a barrage of vocal styles, all generally wired with enough effect to dam the Hudson. Levitt’s brother Rob Levitt performs on several of the tracks, and the cover art was handled by Paul Tierman and Brenner.

Svbterranean is streaming the first single from Tasukete, the boiling madness of “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia.” calling the track, “a nearly five-minute mind-melter of abrasive noise, dizzying atmospheres, pseudo jazz instrumentation, and psychotic vocals. It’s like being trapped in a funhouse while under the influence of illicit substances.”

Stream GRIDFAILURE & MEGALOPHOBE’s “Agoraphobic Claustrophobia” at Svbterranean RIGHT HERE.

Nefarious Industries will release Tasukete on digital and limited CD on October 5th; find preorders at the label shop HERE and via GRIDFAILURE’s Bandcamp HERE and MEGALOPHOBE’s Bandcamp HERE.

Watch for additional audio previews, videos, and more to be issued in the weeks ahead.

GRIDFAILURE has several new solo and various collaborative titles on the verge of completion and new shows being booked for the summer months. MEGALOPHOBE is constructing new material and will morph to a live setting in the coming months. Collaborative Tasukete sets and crossover live actions with both artists should be expected.

Wolves At The Door dispatches a metallic hybrid of punk-fueled hardcore, showcasing NEQUIENT’s talents as writers and performers earned through their years of DIY recording and touring. The band pummels listeners from all directions but never forgets to land the hook, packed with relentless, fleet-fingered riffs, backed by d-beats, single-foot blasts, and an array of inventive fills. The vocals shift from mid-range barks to death metal grunts and pained shrieks, unified by inexhaustible aggression and a lyrical bent toward social critique.

Decibel Magazine posts, “Wolves At The Door, the debut album by Chicago’s NEQUIENT, comes blazing in on misanthropy-fueled ICBM missile sporting all of the above and, therefore, our enthusiastic stamp of approval.” Invisible Oranges offers in part, “The composition is barreling and misanthropic, like many a good Vonnegut tale; and is certainly a worthy take at honoring one hell-of-a-good writer who always seemed right on the edge of fantasy and reality. NEQUIENT is aware of this precarious line… Wolves At The Door — rips hard in its apocalyptic hue.” Toilet Ov Hell referred to, “an album that’s gonna punch through your door like the Kool-Aid Man, drink all your beers, and make you tearfully apologize to your dad for clearing out his booze stash.” Sonic Abuse gave the album a 9/10 review warning that Wolves At The Door is, “every bit as feral as the title implies, the band offering up eleven ear-drum searing tracks in just under forty minutes…Wolves At The Door will appeal to those who worry converge edge too close to conventional melodicism and is the living embodiment of the term relentless.”
