Biography

The DRX began as one man with a dusty yellowed keyboard, a pile of staff paper, and an ambitious vision. New York musician Dan Romans has channeled his compositional prowess through the DRX since 2008. Principally a drum set player, Romans also acts as singer, composer/arranger, and lyricist of the DRX. His rhythmic sense, methodical writing style, and diverse musicality produce an unmatched sound that is performed by the DRX with technical precision and emotive candor.

Romans’ compositions are intense, extremely focused on song form, and charged with despondent tone and catharsis. Dynamics and tension are expertly employed to shape unique songs that traverse haunting and intimate passages, riveting polyrhythmic full-band riffs, brutal breakdowns, and heart-crushing, anthemic cadences. DRX songs are marked by recurring motifs, engaging feel, clever structure, and compelling hooks that engross the mind and entice repetition. The poignant lyrical themes of the music relate emotional suffering, social injustice, and salvific rumination. The sonic aura of the DRX is created by voice, guitar, bass, drum set, and additional instrumentation including: horns, woodwinds, strings, choir, and synthesized drones and sonics.

Although the DRX performs infrequently, the band has been active since 2009. The transforming line-up of excellent contributing musicians includes members of: Beauchene Skulls, Blank Paper, Buke & Gase, East of the Wall, El Drugstore, Gruesome 2sum, Hazel-Rah, Jerseyband, Kayo Dot, Northern Water Snake, Emily Peal, The Riot Oak, and Stern.

The DRX has released the eclectic, high-energy debut: Thesis (2009) – mastered by Zach Lipkins; the heavy, devastating EP: The Deepening Hole (2011) – recorded by Jon Grabowski and Colin Marston, mixed and mastered by Colin Marston; and the truly epic concept album: Throughout Within (2016) – recorded by Tyler Hartman and Jon Grabowksi, mastered by Carl Saff.

The DRX: “Throughout Within” review – Toilet Ov Hell

“Romans is not the first to borrow facets of extreme metal to construct progressive chamber orchestrations. For the past five years he has been toiling rather quietly in the shadows of neighboring genre mutants and miscegenetic luminaries. With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that he continually exceeds the boundaries of standard rock instrumentation to include woodwinds, strings, and choirs. Nor should it come as a surprise, after listening to Throughout Within in full, that it was crafted using members of Kayo Dot, Psalm Zero, and Stern. The New York scene from which The DRX has arisen is as incestuous as it is exciting—and the elements that were birthed there are perhaps nowhere as focused as through the eyes of Romans. Like the short-lived Mare (not a New York band but shut up) or Nucleus Torn (also not a NY band, also shut up) or Kayo Dot (NY band, happy now?) before him, he deploys a wide array of instruments to build expansive songs full of shifting hues and conflicting moods. Yet he never goes weird for the sake of weird, and has a keen enough narrative sense to guide even the not-so-adventurous listener safely through these shifts and conflicts.” – Toilet Ov Hell

The DRX: “Throughout Within” Included on Sweet Bread Productions Best of 2016 List

“The first LP from New York drummer / singer / keyboardist / composer Dan Romans’ ever-evolving collective is an intriguing concept album reflecting on the hollowness of modern life. Recruiting a cast of guest musicians from such underground notables as Kayo Dot, Stern, and Romans’ longtime collaborator, guitarist Ryan Hare, Throughout Within weaves progressive metal, modern chamber music, and an odd but effective pop sensibility into an ambitious and unpredictable journey.” – Sweet Bread Productions

The DRX: Entire Nefarious Industries-Bound Throughout Within Album By NYC Avant-Rock Group Streaming At Heavy Blog Is Heavy – Earsplit Compound

New York City-based avant-rock collective The DRX — led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Romans, and featuring members of Kayo Dot, Psalm Zero, The Riot Oak, Jerseyband, and others – will release the group’s epic new concept album, Throughout Within, through Nefarious Industries at the end of the month. Advancing its release, Heavy Blog Is Heavy now streams the entire album early.

BrooklynVegan offers of Throughout Within, “The DRX mixes harsh, metal-influenced vocals with proggy compositions and an array of hard left turns on the politically-charged song. We get electronics, thundering hardcore, noisy post-punk, horns, choral arrangements, a huge range of sounds.” Treble notes of the band, “The DRX is the project of Dan Romans, and the album features contributions from members of Kayo Dot, Psalm Zero, and other bands. It’s a revolving cast of musicians with Romans at the center of it, creating a stylistically diverse and complex set of art rock that leans toward metal while taking cues from prog. It’s ambitious, heroic stuff.”

Heavy Blog Is Heavy now streams the entire album over a week preceding its release, offering, “Romans is a fascinating musician, wailing and growling across Throughout Within’s nine sprawling tracks that contribute to the overall atmosphere of esoteric whimsy and incongruous tone: somber timbers clash against uplifting major key swells in heartfelt choruses; trumpets blare out through sludgy dirges; playful keys bounce around in morose wonder. Throughout Within is an oddity for sure, but it has the emotional depth and substance back it up.”

Explore the expansive Throughout Within from The DRX only through Heavy Blog Is Heavy at THIS LOCATION.

Nefarious Industries will release The DRX’s Throughout Within digitally on December 30th; preorder bundles including custom packaged and hand-numbered CDs of the first two DRXreleases, Thesis and The Deepening Hole — both in extremely limited quantities — plus a hand-numbered poster of each album’s cover art, including Throughout Within, are available HERE.

The DRX has birthed its cathartic magnum opus with Throughout Within. Recorded by Jon Grabowski, recorded and mixed by Tyler Hartman, and mastered by Carl Saff (Grails, Young Widows), the core instrumentation of Throughout Within includes voice, tenor saxophone, keyboard, electric guitar, synth bass, and drums, with additions of clarinet, trumpet, flugelhorn, bass saxophone, violin, cello, electric cello, and choir vocals. The DRX: “Throughout Within” Album Review – Echoing Magazine

“There are times when a band decides to take their music into the world of “experimental.” This term often means using incredibly odd sounds and musical passages that have nothing to do with each other and have been thrown together for the sake of being “weird.” Fortunately, The DRX and their album Throughout Within is on the other end of the experimental spectrum, taking a swath of different genres and putting them in a way to not only challenge the listener’s preconceived notions of what music can become, but having it all make sense. Their sound combines the off-beat musical sensibilities of Frank Zappa, the synth and feel of 80’s-era Rush, and a touch of the dark and distorted world of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. It’s got saxophone, it’s got 80’s synth, it’s progressive, and it’s all done with an off-kilter clean vocal style that infrequently tosses in a great deathcore scream and palm-muted metal passages just to keep the listener on their toes. ” – Echoing Magazine

The DRX: First Single “Ancient Lie”, From Nefarious Industries-Bound Throughout Within, Premiered At BrooklynVegan – Earsplit Compound

BrooklynVegan is hosting the exclusive premiere of “Ancient Lie,” the first single to be issued from the epic concept album, Throughout Within, by The DRX, which is impending December release through Nefarious Industries.

The New York based avant-rock powerhouse The DRX, led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Romans, has birthed its cathartic magnum opus, Throughout Within. The dense, fifty-seven minute motific concept album, effuses lush, emotive sound that expands upon and surpasses the despondent tone and dynamic intensity of previous albums, The Deepening Hole (2011) and Thesis (2009). Throughout Within was recorded by Jon Grabowski, recorded and mixed by Tyler Hartman, mastered by Carl Saff (Grails, Young Widows), and features musical contributions from Ryan Hare (The Riot Oak), Ed Rosenberg III (Jerseyband, Glue Gun Optimism), Tim Byrnes (Hazel-Rah, Kayo Dot, Stern), Sarah Fylak (Beauchene Skulls), Marie Kim (Blank Paper), Dean Capper, Emily Peal (Pale Gloom, Westeryear), Michelle Silver (The Riot Oak), Arone Dyer (Buke & Gase), Chuck Stern (Stern), and Ron Varod (Kayo Dot, Psalm Zero). The cover art for Throughout Withinwas illustrated by Nico Mazza.

BrooklynVegan premieres the first single from Throughout Within, “Ancient Lie,” noting, “The DRXmixes harsh, metal-influenced vocals with proggy compositions and an array of hard left turns on the politically-charged song. We get electronics, thundering hardcore, noisy post-punk, horns, choral arrangements, a huge range of sounds.”

Stream “Ancient Lie” at BrooklynVegan RIGHT HERE.

Dan Romans, the composer and lyricist of The DRX, comments on the track: “Ancient Lie” is about how masses of people have blindly obeyed corrupt authority for millennia and manifested an attitude characterized by denial, ignorance and apathy. The song’s lyrics, as well as the narrative of Throughout Within, are presently relevant as racism, bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, violence, oppression, greed and abuse of power become increasingly rife in our society. As evidenced by the recent red sweep of our governing bodies and the election of Donald Trump as this nation’s leader, our society is saturated with those that welcome the evocation of a repressive and discriminatory neofascist regime. Betwixt the oppressive powers that be and the blind obedient masses, many individuals already have suffered, for a long time. Fear is poised to conquer, unless people become aware and act towards betterment and harmony. The rise of benevolence, forgiveness, empathy and reverence is needed to repudiate the ancient lie.”

Nefarious Industries will release The DRX’s Throughout Within digitally on December 30th; preorder bundles including custom packaged and hand-numbered CDs of the first two DRXreleases, Thesis and The Deepening Hole—both in in extremely limited quantities—plus a hand-numbered poster of each album’s cover art, including Throughout Within, are available HERE.

Throughout Within‘s seven seamless songs (which are presented as nine tracks) are marked by recurring motifs, engaging feel, clever structure, compelling verses, and bold choruses that engross the mind and entice repetition. Inspired composition, meticulous arrangements, and beautiful production form the unique and enthralling character of Throughout Within. Impassioned vocals, contrapuntal leads, and a pulsing rhythm section produce powerful harmonies, memorable melodies; complex, rousing rhythms, and commanding grooves. Dynamics and tension are expertly employed to shape a grand performance that traverses haunting, intimate passages of horns, strings and voice; moving choral passages, riveting polyrhythmic full-band riffs, brutal breakdowns, and heart-crushing, anthemic cadences. The core instrumentation of Throughout Within includes voice, tenor saxophone, keyboard, electric guitar, synth bass, and drum set, with several songs supplemented by additional instrumentation including clarinet, trumpet, flugelhorn, bass saxophone, violin, cello, electric cello, and choir. Subtle drones and sonic elements add breadth and visceral deepening to the resplendent ensemble. The poignant narrative of Throughout Within relates a human rumination on existence, socially and spiritually. The lyrics convey an observation of, and commentary on: oppression, the many forms of modern, inconspicuous slavery; irresponsibility, denial, fear, depression, disconnection, anger, shame, and ultimately, perspective and unity.

The DRX To Release Epic Concept Album Throughout Within Via Nefarious Industries; Record Includes Contributions From Members Of Kayo Dot, Psalm Zero, And More – Earsplit Compound

06-img_8840-edit

Nefarious Industries is proud to announce the impending release of the epic new concept record from The DRX, titled Throughout Within. The record, written and performed by composer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Romans, features contributions from members of Psalm Zero, Kayo Dot, The Riot Oak, and many others.

New York musician Dan Romans has revivified his compositional entity: the persistent yet rarely observed avant-rock powerhouse, The DRX. Succeeding a five-year gestation, The DRX is birthing its magnum opus Throughout Within, a dense, fifty-seven continuous minutes of cathartic music. The motific concept album effuses lush, emotive sound that expands upon and surpasses the despondent tone and dynamic intensity of previous albums, The Deepening Hole (2011) and Thesis (2009).

Nefarious Industries will officially release The DRX’s Throughout Within digitally on December 30th, 2016. The album’s track listing and cover art by Nico Mazza have been released; stand by for audio samples, preorders, and much more to be leaked in the coming weeks.

The poignant narrative of The DRX’s output on Throughout Within relates a human rumination on existence, socially and spiritually. The lyrics convey an observation of, and commentary on: oppression, the many forms of modern, inconspicuous slavery; irresponsibility, denial, fear, depression, disconnection, anger, shame, and ultimately, perspective and unity.

Extremely focused and highly crafted song form pervades and dominates Throughout Within. The album’s seven seamless songs (which are presented as nine tracks) are marked by recurring motifs, engaging feel, clever structure, compelling verses, and bold choruses that engross the mind and entice repetition.

Inspired composition, meticulous arrangements, and beautiful production form the unique and enthralling character of Throughout Within. 2012: Looks like we’re all still here… some words from Kevin Conway

2013 is shaping up to be an amazing year for Nefarious Industries. Two and a half years into this moronic experiment, we’re getting the opportunity to work with a wide array of artists that are all creating incredible and diverse music. We’re proud to be able to continue to bring you guys such a variety of music that you might not have been exposed to otherwise.

Before I delve too deeply into our future plans, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the great bands that we’ve worked with in 2012. So Is The Tongue, Mount Gomery, Tovarish and arbogast all made great records, and we’re proud to have worked along side of them. If you haven’t checked their records out yet, please do so. Also, don’t forget to avail yourself to our free digital sampler here.

Constants and AxiomsNow, onto the new stuff. We’re going to kick off our year with our first ever international release! Seven Nines and Tens from Vancouver will be releasing a digital single through our label on January 1st titled Constants and Axioms/Kemptville. Seven Nines and Tens plays a particularly muscular and brainy brand of post rock that I think you will all enjoy thoroughly. You can get a taste of the single on our digital sampler. We’re happy to be spreading our auditory virus north of the border!

Seven Inches of A Fucking ElephantJanuary 22nd will mark the return of one of our flagship artists, A Fucking Elephant. We’ll be releasing their amazing new 7″, Seven Inches of A Fucking Elephant. Most of you who follow our collective exploits are familiar with this band’s mindfuckery, and I can assure you that this release is a wonderful extension of that. The EP 7″ will be available in limited quantities of yellow and black vinyl, accompanied by stunning artwork from the warped mind of Eric Nyffeler (doe-eyed.com). Pre-Order now to be entered into the raffle for a chance to win a test pressing of this slick 45. The band will be hitting the road hard in January. Check out their tour dates here.

We’ll be spending most of the spring on 2 awesome vinyl releases. The first will be Farmer’s Almanac by East of the Wall. This one holds a special place in my heart because it’s the first record I ever played on, and I have been waiting to have this on vinyl for quite a few years. We don’t have an exact release date for this one yet, but it will be out in time for the band’s spring tour.

Next up will be Goes To Purgatory by Jar’d Loose. If you’re not already familiar, this awesome Chicago band plays a grimy, Am-Rep sort of nastiness that will get your head banging. We’re happy to be releasing Goes To Purgatory on vinyl. Make sure to check them out on tour next month. Dates can be found here.

My band, El Drugstore, will FINALLY release our debut full-length, Plague Ship, this spring. Needless to say, I’m very proud of the songs on this record and I can’t wait for you all to hear them. More release details are forthcoming. In the meantime, check out a demo of the track “Fascinating Underpants” here.

All of the nuttiness that I outlined above is just the beginning of our year. We’ll be releasing a new record from Pigeon (facebook.com/pigeonny) at some point early in 2013. We’ll be making some forays into improvised acoustic world music, as well as free jazz. One of my goals for this label from day one has been to expose whatever followers we have to a ton of music of all styles that they likely wouldn’t have heard otherwise. 2013 is a big step towards achieving that goal.

A big thank you is in order to everyone who has bought a record from one of our bands, or even just came to a show or helped spread the word. Onwards and upwards.

-Kevin

SO IS THE TONGUE: New Jersey Prog Unit Confirms August Tour – Earsplit Compound

Mount Gomery’s ‘In Series’, out today!

Mount Gomery is the new creative outlet for former Faello Nor guitarist Ryan Hare. While Hare’s past work has typically been of the loud and bombastic variety, Mount Gomery is a project that sees him exploring a completely different side of his talents. The debut album In Series is an unprecedented display of Hare’s melancholy, minimal and overtly personal songs – a lush, delicate work centered around subtle guitars and his outstanding vocals. If you’re looking for more reasons to reach for your wallet, check out the list of contributors on this record. The album was engineered and produced by Zach Lipkins (Dreambear.org) and Marie Kim (Good News Bears, All These Kings), and includes guest appearances by Tim Byrnes (Hazel-Rah, Kayo Dot), Marie Kim (Good News Bears, All These Kings) and Dan Romans (the DRX).

One of the driving forces behind Nefarious Industries has always been to provide a home to a wide variety of music. With In Series, we’re branching out into new territory. This is the first record we’ve put out that we wouldn’t consider “heavy”, and we’re certain you’ll enjoy it. Expect the unexpected.

The DRX Performs ‘The Deepening Hole’ at the Loft in New Brunswick – 01/14/12

Alternative Matter reviews ‘The Deepening Hole’

“It has to be said that there are very few albums or EP’s that come to the listener as a genuine surprise in that they display that essence of originality. The Deepening Hole by the DRX, essentially the brainchild of Dan Romans, has that essence of surprise from the opening few minutes of ‘Love Has Lost the Meaning It Once Had’.” – Alternative Matter

Ben Thompson (badassoftheweek.com) reviews ‘The Deepening Hole’

The mind behind badassoftheweek.com, and the author of Badass: The Book and Badass: Birth of a Legend, has been generous enough to review The Deepening Hole. If the album wasn’t going to win a grammy it will now because of how well Ben writes:

It says something about the DRX that the mellowest song on their album is a track about a dude disemboweling himself on stage and pulling his own guts out in a performance that would have made Sid Vicious cry a single tear of joy. This is a band that has a dude ripping open his chest cavity on the CD jacket. This isn’t a band that fucks around or pulls any punches.

The Deepening Hole is a three-song EP from the DRX, an Experimental Prog-Metal band that mixes heavy guitar riffs with badass synth and horn solos to build a dark, haunting sound that resembles a mix between straight-up avant-garde Metal and that early-90s Nine Inch Nails stuff where Trent Reznor whispered into the microphone and made an entire generation of depressed teenagers want to jump off a building (back when he still did awesome shit and wasn’t writing Doom music or winning Academy Awards). Their songs are aggressive without being overwhelming, sincere and emotional without being lame, and catchy without being fucking annoying – a difficult mix, but one they’ve nailed in this album.

The EP (released by Nefarious Industries) starts with “Love Has Lost the Meaning It Once Had”, which sets the pace by kicking you in the teeth with a wall of sound, then tempering it off with interludes featuring drums, trombone, complicated time signature changes, and a dude shredding the synth in an insane over-the-top solo aimed at melting faces.

“Love Has Lost the Meaning” flows straight into the title track, “The Deepening Hole”, which is the most low-key tune on the album insomuch as any song about publicly dismembering yourself with a knife and pulling out your entrails on stage can be considered “low-key”. It’s a haunting, melodic song with strong synth and melodica backup that is somehow raw and polished at the same time.

The final song, “Episode V” (which, as far as I can tell, has very little to do with Boba Fett, the Ice Planet Hoth, or The Empire Strikes Back in general, though I could be mistaken about this) is a good mix between the previous two songs – it immediately kicks up the pace with a driving drum track, heavy guitars, an electric cello (awesome) and badass metal vocals, yet it somehow blasts your hair to the back of the auditorium while still maintaining the creepy darkness of the previous song.

Despite only having three tracks, The Deepening Hole fits together so well that it can pretty much be listened to as three movements to on epic song. It absolutely leaves you wanting more.

Thompson has written hundreds of articles on “badass” persons, places or things as well as two books published by Harper Collins and various columns for such publications as Cracked, Fangoria and Penthouse. Do yourself a favor and check out his website – badassoftheweek.com

Avantgarde Metal reviews The Deepening Hole

“You know you have a winner, when after the 7 minute song ends, you want to hear it again. But you don’t, because it flows right into the next track.” – Avantgarde Metal

The DRX set to release ‘The Deepening Hole’ on November 8th!

Nefarious Industries is extremely proud to announce that it will release The Deepening Hole, a new EP from the DRX, on November 8th. The DRX is led by drummer Dan Romans, formerly of Boston-based bands Faello Nor and Izzi Creo. The Deepening Hole is a true outlier. The songwriting is tight and crisp, while outlandish instrumentation takes the listener on a journey that most modern rock records cannot.

I’ve known Dan for a while, having done shows with Faello Nor in the past. When he asked Rolando and me to lend our services to the recording of this EP, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be a part of such a unique record. We did the basic tracks with Colin Marston at The Thousand Caves in Woodhaven, NY. Dan is about to head off to the Lawrence Music Clubhouse in Lawrence, MA to add some finishing touches before Colin mixes and masters it.

The DRX
will be booking a short run of shows in November to promote the release of The Deepening Hole. If you’d like to see the DRX in your town, contact Dan at danieljromans@gmail.com. In the meantime, get yourself in the mood by checking out the DRX‘s first release, Thesis, at thedrx.bandcamp.com, and check out drx666.wordpress.com for more delicious updates.

Stay tuned for more details on this exciting release. Keep it nefarious.
