Biography

Since their formation in 2013, Those Darn Gnomes have blurred the lines between noise, metal and free jazz. The group formed initially with the lineup of Mark Steuer (vocals), Christian Molenaar (guitar/flute), Russell Case (bass) and Bryon Wojciechowski (drums), releasing their debut album The Years independently in 2015. The band followed up with their second full-length, The Zodiac, in 2016. While their debut more heavily emphasized the band’s roots in avant-garde metal and hardcore, The Zodiac stripped away any pretense of being a metal band in favor of a new, even more aggressive sound incorporating further elements of free improvisation and harsh noise. The band released a fully improvised single-track EP, Peeling, as a limited cassette in 2017, before playing shows throughout North America with like-minded experimental acts such as Ehnahre, Sult, Hypnagogue, Dischordia and many more.

Calling Whitetails to a Tuned Bow is Those Darn Gnomes’ first release for Nefarious Industries and sees a further expansion and refinement of the band’s sprawling, genre-defying sound. On Calling Whitetails to a Tuned Bow, Those Darn Gnomes explore the outer reaches of progressive metal, free improvisation and avant-garde sound design through the incorporation of algorithmic compositional techniques derived from mold cultivation, homemade instruments and a greater focus on abrasive weirdness.

THOSE DARN GNOMES featured in This One Goes to Eleven: Weekly metal roundup – Free Williamsburg

“Get weird (OK, weirder) with Calling Whitetails to a Tuned Bow (Nefarious Industries), the third long play from experimental death-jazz outfit THOSE DARN GNOMES. Words simply cannot do this intoxicating whiplash justice, but the first few seconds of album opener “Birds”, which ricochets from a ragtime folk diddy to some of the most blood-curdling death doom laid to tape this year, should just about paint the picture.” – Free Williamsburg

Exclusive Stream: Get Slimy with the Latest LP from THOSE DARN GNOMES – Toilet ov Hell

‘Since THOSE DARN GNOMES‘ first album The Years back in 2015, I’ve listened to each new release with equal parts curiosity and bedevilment. Nothing about this band is easy. And yet, Calling Whitetails to a Tuned Bow is somehow the band’s most ambitious and accessible work to date. Amid the weirdo jazz and noise, you’ll find yourself keyed in on haunting passages, as is the case with opener “Birds” which brings to mind the sinister regions of Australia’s The Necks or, perhaps to use a more, uh “mainstream” act, Kayo Dot.” – Toilet ov Hell

This Friday, Nefarious Industries will unleash Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow, the new album from San Diego’s THOSE DARN GNOMES. The collective’s unhinged, unpredictable, and utterly explosive blend of free-jazz, noise, metal, and musical experimentation pushes the boundaries of sanity and safety through every minute of the new release. Toilet Ov Hell is now hosting a stream of the album in its stupefying entirety ahead of its release.

With four tracks in forty minutes, Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow is one of the most intriguing, challenging, genre-defiant, and off-the-chain albums of the year. Fans of Naked City, Ornette Coleman, Fantômas, Zu, Boredoms, Oxbow, Merzbow, Ruins, other boundary-bulldozing extreme music icons, THOSE DARN GNOMES should be the next thing you check out.

Writes Toilet Ov Hell with their advance stream of the album, “Since THOSE DARN GNOMES first album The Years back in 2015, I’ve listened to each new release with equal parts curiosity and bedevilment. Nothing about this band is easy. And yet, Assembling Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow is somehow the band’s most ambitious and accessible work to date. Amid the weirdo jazz and noise, you’ll find yourself keyed in on haunting passages…”

Nefarious Industries will release Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow on all digital platforms and eco-wallet CD this Friday, June 28th. Find preorders at the label webshop HERE and Bandcamp HERE.

Following their release show for the album and a West Coast tour with labelmates Fuck Your Birthday in recent weeks, THOSE DARN GNOMES continues to play with savage frequency across their home state, with additional widespread tour plans to be announced.

THOSE DARN GNOMES Live:
6/29/2019 UC San Diego – San Diego, CA

Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow is THOSE DARN GNOMES’ first release for Nefarious Industries and sees a further expansion and refinement of the band’s sprawling, genre-defying sound. Here, the group explores the outer reaches of progressive metal, free improvisation, and avant-garde sound design through the incorporation of algorithmic compositional techniques derived from mold cultivation, homemade instruments, and a greater focus on abrasive weirdness. The album captures the intense, antagonistic, and damaging sound that has become the live THOSE DARN GNOMES experience, particularly with the new lineup comprised of Christian Molenaar (voice, electronics), Noah Souza (saxophone), Jonathan Piper (tuba), Joe Molenaar (bass), Russell Case (tenor guitar), and Nathan Hubbard (drums).

While the lineup of THOSE DARN GNOMES has since shifted, Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow was performed and self-recorded at Apollo’s Crotch by then core members Mark Steuer, Christian Molenaar, Russell Case, and Bryon Wojciechowski, who collectively deliver a crushingly odd blend of instruments. A throng of guest musicians provides a barrage of additional instrumentation, coalescing in a demented layering of guitars, bass, drums, percussion, power electronics, brass and woodwind instruments, an array of stringed instruments, keys, and more. The album’s cover collage was created by Robert Khasho, visually depicting the abstract dementia of the album.

THOSE DARN GNOMES: “Calling Whitetails to a Tuned Bow” Review at Exclaim!

“The record jumps headfirst into a hellscape of feedback, distortion and noise music, with all the subtlety of a ten-car pileup. You can literally hear the instruments crying out in agony as they are twisted into unnatural shapes. Listening to it, you’d be forgiven for flopping around like a clubbed fish on speed. For similar effect, picture Full of Hell crashing the stage at a Willie Nelson concert. Then, without warning, the noise stops. Things slow to an ethereal whisper, but it’s too late. THOSE DARN GNOMES have got us on our toes. With four tracks spanning over 40 minutes, it’s impossible to guess where this record could go. Outside of Micheal Gira’s Swans, it would be hard to find a record that keeps its audience in such mind-bending suspense.” – Exclaim!

THOSE DARN GNOMES: “Calling Whitetails to a Tuned Bow” Review at Burning Ambulance

“To the outsider, noise music and free jazz might not be so different, but to fans these genres are usually worlds apart. Not only do THOSE DARN GNOMES successfully bring the two together, they do so with a grace and sense of dynamics that give the music a powerful atmosphere despite the overall abrasiveness of the material. The mesh of electronic and live instrumentation is seamless, and there is a depth present that rewards repeated listening. Calling Whitetails to a Tuned Bow is full of challenging material, but those who explore the nooks and crannies of the interzones between these experimental genres will no doubt be rewarded for their efforts.” – Burning Ambulance

Premiere: San Diego’s THOSE DARN GNOMES Up the Weirdness Game With “Birds” – PopMatters

“A collision of avant-garde jazz, the wild, wooly experiments of composer Harry Partch, Beatnik poetry, shattered noise, shards of black box theater, the sinister weirdness lurking behind the childlike chaos of The Muppet Show. Somewhere in there are moments of calm and one drifts away on a bed of acoustic jazz meditations that recall Ralph Towner‘s best, most imaginative work in that world during the 1970s; strains of minimalism, lysergic opera, and ancient campfire songs emerge before we’re thrust back into a core of molten weirdness that provides total catharsis.” – PopMatters

THOSE DARN GNOMES: PopMatters Premieres “Birds” As Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow Nears Release Via Nefarious Industries; West Coast Tour With Fuck Your Birthday Begins This Week – Earsplit Compound

As Nefarious Industries prepares to release Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow, the album from San Diego’s THOSE DARN GNOMES, PopMatters has unveiled the lead track, “Birds,” offering the first dose of the album to the public. The collective’s unhinged, unpredictable, and utterly explosive blend of free-jazz, noise, metal, and musical experimentation pushes the boundaries of sanity and safety through every minute of the new release.

THOSE DARN GNOMES’ Christian Molenaar offers, “Assembling Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow was a messy process; this album features a wider range of songwriting methods than any we’ve made before. While our previous records brewed dense blends of free improvisation and convoluted compositional techniques (serialist canons, tangled webs of counterpoint, aleatoric games to name a few), I knew I wanted to take things farther and try to incorporate more new ideas. To that end, I spent a good deal of this album’s gestation time on intricate sound design from unique sources: namely, slime mold.”

Molenaar elaborates, “While writing this album and living in absolute filth I ended up accidentally cultivating slime mold (physarum) and, rather than simply cleaning my house like a functional human, I began researching tools to track the mold’s growth rates. Once the data was collected, I processed it in a variety of ways to transform it into music, from feeding it to synthesizers as raw MIDI information to creating complex generative music programs in Pure Data and Max. The resulting noise formed the foundation around which much of Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow was based. ‘Birds’ is the album’s opening statement and serves to tease what’s to come throughout the rest of the album; layers of collapsing instrumentation collide with otherworldly electronic noise over the course of epic-length pieces. This record contains a lot of surprises, but ‘Birds’ teases a few early on.”

PopMatters writes, “A collision of avant-garde jazz, the wild, wooly experiments of composer Harry Partch, Beatnik poetry, shattered noise, shards of black box theater, the sinister weirdness lurking behind the childlike chaos of The Muppet Show. Somewhere in there are moments of calm and one drifts away on a bed of acoustic jazz meditations that recall Ralph Towner’s best, most imaginative work in that world during the 1970s; strains of minimalism, lysergic opera, and ancient campfire songs emerge before we’re thrust back into a core of molten weirdness that provides total catharsis. ‘Tis only the beginning.”

THOSE DARN GNOMES: Calling Whitetails to a Tuned Bow album review – The Doorway To

“When it gets weird and uncomfortable for most musically, that means it’s something interesting to listen to, and with THOSE DARN GNOMES we hit the mother load. Jazz, Noise, Grind, Hardcore, Ambient, Gospel, Folk and Avant elements are just the tip of the iceberg. […] You really just need to hear this to understand and it really goes from Jazz, Metal, Noise, to Avant Wonders. There are very few bands I could even begin to tell you to listen to (John Zorn, Mike Patton, Secret Chiefs 3, Pain Killers, Melt Banana, Fleurety, When, Bogus Blimp, and Yakuza). Do you get how bizarre I’m going here. You need to experience the wonder and majesty of this off the wall album. Some of you are just going to fucking hate it, others will worship this. THOSE DARN GNOMES have gotten into my brain and will not leave now.” – The Doorway To

Offers FUCK YOUR BIRTHDAY’s Christopher Henry of the split, “Our tracks on Blow Out the Candles and Make A Split are a simultaneous foray into poppy song structuring, punk-spirit summoning, and mountainous dynamic landscaping. In ‘The Plan,’ there’s a classic third chorus-key-change, and ‘Go Outside’ has a vocal refrain perfect for singing along on the first listen. Both tunes are packed with plenty of power-chords and punk-beats. But they’re far from one-dimensional. There are valleys that fall to almost a whisper, and peaks that nearly reach wall-of-sound status. In an 80/20 mix of singing to screaming, we complain about the 9-5 grind and about the weak WiFi signal in my old apartment. But we know we’ve got it good, and we’re stoked to be releasing this split with our pals in SPACE MONKEY, so you don’t even need to ask us what we wished for.”

SPACE MONKEY’s Pengdee states, “Youth, to many people, hardly includes more than the time spent nose-diving in textbooks. However, we see youth as the energy source necessary for breaking out of the numbness of adulthood. So, we implore youths everywhere to shirk those chains of conformity, avoid falling into the mentality of the middle-aged man, and run as wild as a space monkey. Pinboard was/is my original band from high school, but then when Junsun and I went to college we started a band to play a simpler slice of punk rock, akin to our favorite bands: The Ramones and The Clash. We decided to title this band SPACE MONKEY after seeing Fight Club, when Tyler calls his gang of henchmen space monkeys. We thought the way they worked off their stress could be compared to the punk rockers moshing in the pit.”

Blow Out The Candles And Make A Split will see release via Nefarious Industries on July 12th; find preorders at the label webshop HERE and Bandcamp HERE.

Watch for audio samples and more to be issued in the weeks ahead.

FUCK YOUR BIRTHDAY is an American garage rock/math rock band born in Morgantown, West Virginia, and currently based out of New York City and Wenzhou, China. Formed in 2012, vocalist/guitarist Christopher Henry and drummer Roman Meisenberg have maintained a prolific stream of DIY releases and touring activity, despite their frequent time apart. After a brief stint as a trio with bassist/vocalist Michelle Fincham, who is featured on the January 2014 EP The Cymbal Barks Louder Than YouFUCK YOUR BIRTHDAY forged ahead as a duo, embarking on their Jet-lag Revival Tour followed by the Li EP in October 2014, which was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Jeff Klemm of Akron, Ohio’s Maid Myriad. June 2015 saw the release of the Future Teller EP, at which point the band began working on material for a full-length.

Crafted over frequent Megabus treks between New York and Morgantown, FUCK YOUR BIRTHDAY’s debut LP, Touchless Automatic, was released in April 2016. Touring was not possible at this time as Christopher had recently graduated and accepted a job as an ESL teacher in Wenzhou, China. The following year, in April of 2017, Roman traveled to Wenzhou for FUCK YOUR BIRTHDAY’s first international tour. Spring Roll 2017 spanned two weeks and eight cities in Southern China. In October 2017, Meisenberg returned to Wenzhou to play more shows and work on new material. A selection of these sessions was released in June 2018 as Maydays, quickly selling out during the Maydays Tour.

The year was 2010; bōsōzoku style ran rampant through the halls of Guangzhou’s Academy Of Fine Arts, and everywhere you looked there were band-boys spiking and dying their hair. Among them were bassist/vocalist, Junsun, and guitarist/vocalist, Pengdee, two rebellious youths that liked to play by their own rules. They graduated and formed SPACE MONKEY. The team was later completed by Banana, whose skillful drumming keeps audiences front to back bouncing around like crazed apes. The band is now a staple act of the punk scene in Guangzhou, China and its members have been running the God Bless Punk music festival for three years strong, featuring bands from all over China. Lead singer and guitarist Pengdee also plays with side project Pinboard.

THOSE DARN GNOMES: Unhinged San Diego Metal/Free-Jazz Outfit Signs With Nefarious Industries; New Album To See Spring Release + Tour Dates Posted – Earsplit Compound

Those Darn Gnomes

Nefarious Industries has expanded its operations once again, announcing the acquisition and impending disbursement of new auditory demolition from San Diego’s unhinged THOSE DARN GNOMES, preparing their new album for release this spring.

Since their formation in 2013, the bombastic THOSE DARN GNOMES collective has blurred the lines between noise, metal, and free jazz. The group formed initially with the lineup of Mark Steuer (vocals), Christian Molenaar (guitar, flute), Russell Case (bass), and Bryon Wojciechowski (drums), releasing their debut album The Years independently in 2015. The band released a fully improvised single-track EP, Peeling, as a limited cassette in 2017, before playing shows throughout North America with like-minded experimental acts such as Ehnahre, Sult, Hypnagogue, Dischordia, and many more.

Watch for the full details on Calling Whitetails To A Tuned Bow to be released shortly with a springtime release date imminent.

Also watch for details on the collaborative album between the band’s Christian Molenaar and labelmate Gridfailure’s architect David Brenner to be issued in the coming days.

THOSE DARN GNOMES, notorious for going haywire upon unsuspecting audiences live with extreme regularity, has a string of shows booked throughout Southern California throughout February. Watch for new tour updates to be continually announced through the year featuring the band’s newly-expanded lineup of Christian Molenaar (voice, electronics), Noah Souza (saxophone) Jonathan Piper (tuba), Joe Molenaar (bass), Russell Case (tenor guitar), and Nathan Hubbard (drums). Witness a small clip of recent live melee HERE.

“It’s super disorienting, it’s very aggressive, it’s very brittle and noisy… It’s like it’s intended to be as nasty and disgusting as it is… There’s definitely a lot of technical ability to what these guys are doing which definitely shines through…” – The Needle Drop

“I can but applaud the insane and forward-thinking experiment, especially on the aspects of composition and musicianship… The avant-garde jazz/mathcore/chamber music ensemble is astonishing and memorable.” – Can This Even Be Called Music?

“You may remember the arrival of Mr. Bungle’s sophomore album in 1995. It was a bit shocking, this very long, very uncooperative representation of their advance from proggy spaz metal with awesome melodies to antagonistic avant garde. On top of that, Disco Volante is distant and dense, so it took a few listens to make you certain that it is awesome. Here in 2016, Those Darn Gnomes speaks a similar language but way less cryptically. Their new album The Zodiac doesn’t ellude your attention; it is an elephant buttfucking a bus packed with scrap metal. Beautiful. Listen to this at least once.” – MetalSucks

“Those in need of a good mindfuck would do well to feast their ears on The Zodiac. Using noisy and spastic riffs while weaving in distant and creepy jazzy and proggy melodies may be jarring at the start to say the least, but if you give it time, they start to unveil their purpose… Only those looking for the eccentric and off-kilter need apply.” – Dead Rhetoric

“…as beguiling as any dark ambient album yet as compositionally byzantine as any extreme metal record, deftly veering from genius to insanity to sheer ugliness in a way that revered weirdos like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and UneXpect can only dream.” – Toilet Ov Hell

THOSE DARN GNOMES:
