Biography

Twin Cities-based extreme metal quintet BLACKTHORNE presents their self-titled debut LP. Following an independent limited cassette release, the album has been expanded with new material, remixed and remastered, and will see an official release on LP and all digital platforms this October through a collective of independent labels: Nefarious Industries, JEMS, 5nakefork Records, and Damien Records.

Based in the region of Minneapolis and St. Paul, BLACKTHORNE formed in the spring of 2012 after the end of Init Records artist Chibalo, with Steve Brooks on guitar (Chibalo), Bob Eisenbise on bass (KillSadie, Chibalo, Damien Records), Travis Bos on vocals (Song of Zarathustra, Book of Dead Names, Chariots, The Blight, Chibalo, Damien Records) and Matt Seitzinger on drums. The four quickly recorded a demo and played numerous month residencies and shows in and around the Twin Cities, sharing the stage with both national and local bands.

In January 2014, BLACKTHORNE released the Necro Shark I – VIII 7” EP through Blood Of The Young Records, and in March of 2015 they were a part of the Butchers Waltz Vol II split 12” with Blacklisters, Hey Colossus, and STNNNG released through Learning Curve Records.

For the next year-and-a-half, the band began writing for their debut LP. Going with the theme aesthetic from their first EP they decided to write twenty satirical songs about the characters from the Police Academy movies entitled We Take This Shit Seriously. The record was shelved when close friend and Blood Of The Young Records owner Nick Thompson, who intended to release the record, passed away.

Wanting to go a different route with the music and lyrical matter, BLACKTHORNE enlisted friend and ex-Chibalo drummer Michael Kahleck on second guitar. They released a five-song, self-titled EP through their own Damien Records during March of 2017 and continued to write for their LP as a five piece. In October of 2018, Damien Records released the band’s self-titled cassette debut full-length.

Shortly after the release, BLACKTHORNE was approached by JEMS for an official release of the Blackthorne on vinyl, teaming up with Nefarious Industries, 5nakefork Records, and the band’s own Damien Records, as well as 5nakefork Records to handle printing. The expanded LP format of Blackthorne takes the album’s initial ten songs and adds five new tracks not previously released on any format. All material was recorded and mixed by Bruce Woullet, the full album mastered by Bill Henderson at Azimuth Mastering, and completed with art and layout by Mark McCoy.

As Twin Cities extreme metal outfit BLACKTHORNE prepares for this Friday’s official release of their eponymous debut LP, the album is now playing early through an exclusive stream hosted by MetalBite. Blackthorne will be issued through a multi-label co-op deployment by Nefarious Industries, JEMS, 5nakefork Records, and the band’s Damien Records.

Blackthorne boasts fifteen tracks merging elements of blackened metal, scathing punk and more, delivering a nonstop ripper of an LP. Following an independent limited cassette release, the official LP release has been expanded with five new songs and has been fully remixed and remastered for vinyl.

Vocalist Travis Bos offers, “With prior releases for BLACKTHORNE, I never really tried to take the lyrics too seriously. We started out as a band that just wanted to have fun and to be more lighthearted. Not for any real reason beyond the fact that we all have known one another for decades and have a good chemistry together musically.

After about three years’ time, a lot in life we couldn’t control had happened. Such as losing many close friends and family to suicide, opiate addictions or natural causes, to the current climate politically, and so on. Most of this all happened in a very brief period, too. So naturally our outlook shifted, and it became a lot easier and more natural to express all these frustrations we’ve all been going through. The music is a lot darker this time around and with more depth. Not to sound cliché, but it’s an honest effort of expressing how we felt as band and how we’ve changed as people during the process.”

MetalBite writes with their advance stream of the album, “Fueled by historical occurrences leading up to the current times, BLACKTHORNE through their self-titled album, aim to stomp out all things they detest socially. Taking refuge under the political umbrella, the Twin Cities quintet bring with them a voice echoing through the underground at a deafening pitch through ‘Poser Disposer,’ ‘Choose Your Side Of History,’ and ‘The Minds Ear’. Fusing hardcore riffs, vocals and drumming with a bit of punk metal anti-society spice, BLACKTHORNE awaken the anger of all standing with them.”

BLACKTHORNE: Decibel Magazine Premieres “Fiending For The Anxious” Video By Twin Cities Metal Quintet; Self-Titled LP Nears Release Through Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

Decibel Magazine is hosting the public premiere of Twin Cities-based metal quintet BLACKTHORNE’s new video for “Fiending For The Anxious.” The track comes from the band’s incoming self-titled LP, nearing release in late October through a collective of independent labels: Nefarious Industries, JEMS, 5nakefork Records, and Damien Records. Following an independent limited cassette release, BLACKTHORNE’s self-titled debut LP has been expanded with new songs and has been remixed and remastered for vinyl.

The “Fiending For The Anxious” video was filmed by Joel Andersen (ex-Disembodied, Devilinside). BLACKTHORNE vocalist Travis Bos offers, “Most of this album reflects on a lot of negativity in life, pop culture, politics, interactions with everyday folk, and so on. This song, while vague, is still fairly to the point when it comes to explaining the power of people’s words. Specifically, those who choose to weaponize them, as the lyrics explain in a way that’s for their own self benefit with no care of what the outcome might be. We see this in movements that people get involved with, politicians, celebrities, even your family or friends. The title references those who enjoy, if not get off on using their influence on those who are quite anxious to follow them.”

Decibel’s piece offers in part, “…BLACKTHORNE’s debut LP bangs out fifteen tracks of punk-leaning extreme metal in just about as many minutes.”

BLACKTHORNE: Twin Cities Metal Outfit Premieres “Choose Your Side Of History” Via Toilet Ov Hell As Self-Titled LP Nears Release – Earsplit Compound

Twin Cities-based extreme metal quintet BLACKTHORNE delivers the charged new single, “Choose Your Side Of History,” pulled from their impending self-titled LP, which sees release at the end of October. The new track makes its public induction through an exclusive stream hosted by Toilet Ov Hell.

Following an independent limited cassette release, BLACKTHORNE’s self-titled debut LP has been expanded with new songs, and has been remixed and remastered for vinyl. The record will see an official release on LP and all digital platforms this October through a collective of independent labels: Nefarious Industries, JEMS, 5nakefork Records, and Damien Records.

BLACKTHORNE’s vocalist Travis Bos declares with the “Choose Your Side Of History” single, “It’s a song regarding the normalization of white nationalism, racism, and xenophobia in the US, especially over the last decade once we elected our first multiracial president. That seemed to have been a tipping point for those who fear, hate and/or willfully choose to remain ignorant when it comes to people of color, refugees, and immigrants. I express my disdain for their beliefs in the song lyrics and as well as those who choose to do nothing and remain silent about our matters at hand.”

Toilet Of Hell writes, “The Twin Cities metallers have drawn a line in the sand and are ready to snuff out every misused tiki torch with their new song ‘Choose Your Side Of History.’ Vocalist Travis Bos’s sharp voice cuts through Presidential double-speak, governmental gaslighting, and dogwhistles like a blade. Guitarist Steve Brooks and bassist Bob Eisenbise weave a catchy metallic blend to ward off those that wish to divide us while drummer Matt Seitzinger drives home the message that we will not go silently into the night. To paraphrase Thomas Hobbes, one of the founders of modern political thinking and author of Leviathan, this song is, ‘nasty, brutish, and short.’”
