Biography

Formed in the Fall of 2015 by two-thirds of now defunct punk/metal ensemble arbogast, also part of the Nefarious Industries family, MINE COLLAPSE picks things up where arbogast left off, with Aaron Roemig and Mike Rataj continuing a nearly decade-long collaborating streak. Roemig and Rataj hurl a ten ton mass of experience onto the Chicago music scene with their newest endeavor—having served time in other Chicago notables Lord (Asian Man Records), Modern Advances (Baldy Longhair Records), Retro Morning, and Still Machine. Rounding out the sound on the EP and live is Ed Sanches-Gomes, the mastermind behind the Latinoamericano Shoegaze project, Umbra Sum (Acuarela Records).

On their self-titled debut, MINE COLLAPSE delves into a uniquely heavy, jagged, sludge-punk sound featuring reverb-soaked vocals. Clocking in at twenty-two minutes, the four-song EP shows layers of frantic noise rock and doom riffage stacked atop Rataj’s signature jazz-infused pummeling drum style. Influences range from contemporary heavy bands — think Torche, QOTSA, Don Caballero, Boris and The Austerity Program — to old-school nineties AmRep bands à la Helmet, Jesus Lizard, and Unsane.

Review: Mine Collapse S/T – Valley Of Steel

“Four tracks of kick-ass metallic hardcore […] continually expanding and contracting, tides washing over everything and drifting back out to sea, over and over. The songs seem to keep swirling around in a frenzy, like a musical circle-pit.” – Valley Of Steel

MINE COLLAPSE: Self-Titled Debut Playing At Heavy Blog Is Heavy; EP Out Friday Through Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

Mine Collapse

The debut from Chicago-based MINE COLLAPSE will see release in the form of the trio’s self-titled EP via Nefarious Industries this week. Recorded with Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos, Lord Mantis, Harm’s Way) at Bricktop Recording, and mastered by Carl Saff (Coliseum, Sofy Major, Young Widows), the explosive first title from MINE COLLAPSE picks up where arbogast, the former act of two members, left off, fusing cranked-up noise crunch, angular-yet-melodic punk hooks, and terminal rhythmic bombast into a rampaging and engaging concoction.

Heavy Blog Is Heavy is streaming Mine Collapse early, raving, “This EP is ridiculously awesome. It’s like a combo of hardcore with some post(-) stuff thrown in. The vocals are like classic hardcore style a la Modern Life Is War but the music is very rich with detail and has some great depth to it. This Chicago act has impressed me thoroughly with such a strong release…”

Hear the debut from MINE COLLAPSE early at Heavy Blog Is Heavy RIGHT HERE.

The self-titled debut from MINE COLLAPSE delves into a uniquely heavy, jagged, sludge-punk sound. Mine Collapse sees release this Friday, July 22nd, on CD and through all prime digital retailers; preorders are available through Nefarious Inudustries HERE and through the band HERE.

MINE COLLAPSE’s release show for the EP sees the band supporting Child Bite and SNAFU on July 30th. Additional tour dates following the release of the record will be announced shortly.

Throughout the Mine Collapse EP, a running lyrical theme attempts to, in the words of the band, “address the frustrations in the face of a corporatized culture and the inevitable surrender to it.” This is present in the “Zeroed” single, for which the band offers, “’Zeroed’ similarly echoes the lyrical theme of modern misanthropy, calling out insatiable consumerism and shameless entitlement among the upper crust. ‘Last in line is first to fail/ Choking down the bitter pill / After everything’s consumed / Empty life goes unfulfilled’.”

Take for instance their song “Zeroed” (being heard for the first time right here) from the band’s pending July 22nd release via Nefarious Industries, Mine Collapse, it’s as chaotic as it is organized, as jarring as it is soothing.
