Biography

Nequient is a metallic hardcore band from Chicago. Drawing from a wide range of influences – including crust, sludge, grind, old-school death metal, and black metal – the quartet pummels listeners from all directions but never forgets to land the hook. They specialize in relentless, fleet-fingered riffs backed by d-beats, single-foot blasts, and an array of inventive fills. The vocals shift from mid-range barks to death metal grunts and pained shrieks, unified by inexhaustible aggression and a lyrical bent toward social critique.

Nequient’s initial lineup came together in early 2014 to play raw, vicious crust. Over the course of several personnel shifts, the band honed its sharp delivery as a live unit and worked on increasingly varied new material. The band began touring regionally and recorded 2015’s Infinite Regress EP with producer Pete Grossmann at Bricktop Recording.

In early 2017, the group settled on its current four-piece configuration and spearheaded a politically motivated benefit compilation titled Fight Liar with Fire, issued through Sassbologna Records. Later the same year, the band returned to Bricktop, recording an album that shows off their growth as writers and performers without sacrificing an ounce of pummeling aggression. After years of DIY recording and touring, Nequient is releasing its first proper full-length album, Wolves at the Door, due out in Spring 2018 through Nefarious Industries.

“The composition is barreling and misanthropic, like many a good Vonnegut tale; and is certainly a worthy take at honoring one hell-of-a-good writer who always seemed right on the edge of fantasy and reality. NEQUIENT is aware of this precarious line… Wolves At The Door — rips hard in its apocalyptic hue.” – Invisible Oranges

NEQUIENT: Wolves At The Door – Akron Beacon Journal

NEQUIENT is inspired by the chaotic sonic world of crust punk, chaoscore and other heavy subgenre with its insane tempos, disorienting start-stop riffs and exhausting D-beat filled drums. To the uninitiated, or simply unappreciative, this style of music often sounds like a circular saw engaging in an angry threesome with a chainsaw and an MRI machine while some dude nearby repeatedly gets kicked in the nethers. I dig some of it and the NEQUIENT guys, promoting their debut album Wolves at the Door, are tight and musical enough to get some good, if insane, grooves going.” – Akron Beacon Journal

NEQUIENT: ‘Wolves At The Door’ Album Review – SonicAbuse

“If NEQUIENT had stuck to the three-minute-an-less formula when composing this album, it would have been a solid grind effort characterised by its ferocity and intense musicianship. What raises it to the ranks of the exceptional, however, is when the band break cover to deliver something that, whilst equally intense, traverses different sonic territory. The seven-minute ‘on the day of execution’ is the stand-out track, lurking at the heart of the album, ready to tackle the unwary with a demonic glimmer in its eye, but equally impressive are ‘coins for the ferryman’ and ‘screaming across the sky’, both of which make good use of their expanded run time to explore hitherto unexpected territory. The sense of dynamic works well as the listener is never allowed to become numb to the overwhelming speed of delivery and, overall, Wolves At The Door stands out as an intelligent, cranium-melting work of deviant art. 9″ – SonicAbuse

NEQUIENT: Wolves at the Door 8.0/10 review – Ghost Cult Magazine

“A sea change seems to be afoot in the heavy music game. Young bands like Code Orange, Knocked Loose and now NEQUIENT’s approach to the genre is to craft albums that pull from as wide a net of influences as possible and spinning that yarn into functional songs. On Wolves at the Door (Nefarious Industries) NEQUIENT uses d-beat-laden Crust Punk as a framework, and stacks on Thrash, Grindcore, Hardcore, Sludge and Black Metal to create a collage of brutality.” – Ghost Cult Magazine

NEQUIENT: “Cult Of Ignorance” Streaming At Decibel Magazine; Nefarious Industries To Release Wolves At The Door By Chicago Quartet Next Week – Earsplit Compound

Nequient[photo by Nicolas Côté]

As Nefarious Industries prepares to release Wolves At The Door – the new album by Chicago-based metallic hardcore quartet NEQUIENT – Decibel Magazine has premiered the album’s wicked “Cult Of Ignorance.”

“Cult Of Ignorance” is a good example of how we try to fuse an array of extreme metal and hardcore influences into a concise song that gets your head banging, offers NEQUIENT vocalist Jason Kolkey. “You can hear touches of a lot of the music we love, hopefully brought together into a cohesive whole that has its own sound. As for the title, I borrowed that from a famous 1980 essay by the science fiction writer and biochemist Isaac Asimov. He lamented the prevalence of anti-intellectualism in American public life, arguing that a contempt for learning and expertise was doing serious damage to democracy. I can only imagine what he would have made of our current moment of fake news, Trumpism, and Brexit, all of which are among the lyrical targets in this song.”

Decibel’s summation of the album’s output as heard on “Cult Of Ignorance” includes, “Wolves At The Door, the debut album by Chicago’s NEQUIENT, comes blazing in on misanthropy-fueled ICBM missile sporting all of the above and, therefore, our enthusiastic stamp of approval.”

Track Premiere: NEQUIENT Taps Old Veins with “Cult of Ignorance” – Decibel Magazine

“There are many things in life that will instantly put a stupid smile on my stupider face. The list includes, but is not limited to, D-beat madness, late ’90s/’00s chaoscore, and the collapse of mankind transposed into sound. Wolves at the Door, the debut album by Chicago’s NEQUIENT, comes blazing in on a misanthropy-fueled ICBM missile sporting all of the above and, therefore, our enthusiastic stamp of approval.” – Decibel Magazine

Nequient Trusts Their Vonne-Gut on “Cat’s Cradle” – Invisible Oranges

“The composition is barreling and misanthropic, like many a good Vonnegut tale; and is certainly a worthy take at honoring one hell-of-a-good writer who always seemed right on the edge of fantasy and reality. NEQUIENT is aware of this precarious line, and “Cat’s Cradle” — a new single from their upcoming full-length Wolves at the Door — rips hard in its apocalyptic hue.” – Invisible Oranges

“It’s two minutes to midnight on the Doomsday Clock, and no matter how much you stare at the strings you’re not going to see any cat or any cradle.”

Chicago’s unhinged metal/hardcore outfit NEQUIENT has dispatched a new track from their Nefarious Industries-bound Wolves At The Door, through a premiere of the album’s “Cat’s Cradle” through Invisible Oranges.

Recorded by Pete Grossmann at Bricktop Recording (Weekend Nachos, Immortal Bird, Disrotted) and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Integrity, All Pigs Must Die, Full Of Hell), and completed with artwork by M.G. Miller (Bongripper, Lord Mantis, Sick/Tired), NEQUIENT’s Wolves At The Door is an explosive album full of unrelenting energy fans of Converge, Baptists, Cursed, All Pigs Must Die, and similar metallic hardcore/punk should not ignore.

NEQUIENT reveals of the new song, “’Cat’s Cradle’ gives you a look at the more dynamic and rhythmically inventive side of the album. Overall, it’s a dense, heavy track that lets everyone in the band stretch out and show off a little bit. As many people would probably guess, the title is a reference to Kurt Vonnegut’s 1963 novel. The lyrics attempt to engage with what that book had to say about humanity’s most destructive tendencies and the way we paper over that horror with flimsy, arbitrary belief systems. We live in a dangerous moment of high tensions around the world and political rhetoric that’s increasingly unhinged from reality or compassion. Meanwhile, the weapons that inspired Vonnegut to imagine his version of the apocalypse have not gone away. It’s two minutes to midnight on the Doomsday Clock, and no matter how much you stare at the strings you’re not going to see any cat or any cradle.”

Invisible Oranges offers in part with their premiere, “The composition is barreling and misanthropic, like many a good Vonnegut tale; and is certainly a worthy take at honoring one hell-of-a-good writer who always seemed right on the edge of fantasy and reality. NEQUIENT is aware of this precarious line, and ‘Cat’s Cradle’ — a new single from their upcoming full-length Wolves At The Door — rips hard in its apocalyptic hue.”

Later the same year, the band returned to Bricktop, recording first proper full-length album, Wolves At The Door.

NEQUIENT has a Scorcher for ya – Toile ov Hell

“Your first taste of Wolves at the Door is “Scorcher”, the opening track and a fitting introduction to an album that’s gonna punch through your door like the Kool-Aid Man, drink all your beers, and make you tearfully apologize to your dad for clearing out his booze stash. “Scorcher” bursts to life with a godawful clatter and slams it into high gear with d-beat madness. Fans of Early Graves will welcome this track with open arms.” – Toilet ov Hell

Nefarious Industries welcomes Chicago-based grinding metal/hardcore quartet NEQUIENT to their ever-morphing roster of underground artists, preparing the band’s incoming debut album, Wolves At The Door, for release in May. The album’s cover art, track listing, and opening track “Scorcher” have released through a premiere at Toilet Ov Hell.

Offers NEQUIENT’s vocalist Jason Kolkey, “As the album’s opening track, ‘Scorcher’ is meant to slap you in the face with hook-laden metallic hardcore and make sure you’re paying attention. When Patrick, our guitarist, first showed the riffs to our drummer, Chris, he said the song was a ‘scorcher.’ I decided I wasn’t going to come up with a better title than that. The lyrics are about toxic individuals with addictive personalities and the way they involve others in their drive toward self-destruction. ‘Scorcher’ introduces a key theme for the album, which explores how those bleak, fatalistic impulses can infect an entire culture.”

Toilet Ov Hell declares, “Your first taste of Wolves At The Door is ‘Scorcher’, the opening track and a fitting introduction to an album that’s gonna punch through your door like the Kool-Aid Man, drink all your beers, and make you tearfully apologize to your dad for clearing out his booze stash. ‘Scorcher’ bursts to life with a godawful clatter and slams it into high gear with d-beat madness. Fans of Early Graves will welcome this track with open arms.”
