Biography

Since forming in 2007, Mike Eber (Smother Party), Jeff Eber (Dysrhythmia), and Johnny DeBlase (Sabbath Assembly, Many Arms) have sought to blur the lines between prog, jazz, and metal. ZEVIOUS released their self-titled debut in 2008 which featured a more traditional acoustic sound and hinted at the compositional style the band was beginning to develop. Soon after, the band caught the attention of Cuneiform Records and released After the Air Raid in 2009, abandoning the traditional sound of their first record for a more power-trio style involving louder volumes with a leaning toward melodic/polymetric compositions. The subsequent years marked a period of frequent touring and musical development for the band. In 2013 ZEVIOUS released their second record for Cuneiform, Passing Through the Wall, an even more aggressive realization of their trademark polymetric style. After a fruitful US tour with Dysrhythmia in late 2013, the band worked feverishly on a new batch of material while playing more on the NYC metal scene with acts such as Behold…the Arctopus, Krallice, Ocrilim, Child Abuse, Cellular Chaos, and others.

Lowlands marks ZEVIOUS‘ first effort for Nefarious Industries and offers a subtle change in direction from their previous two releases. On Lowlands the band explores a hypnotic and more streamlined rhythmic approach while maintaining their abrasive edge with influences ranging from new-wave and 20th century composition to doom and black metal.

PAK: New York City Avant/Progressive Trio Joins Nefarious Industries Roster; Band To Play New York City And Philadelphia Shows This Week – Earsplit Compound

PAK

Long-running New York City-based math/prog/experimental outfit PAK – with members of The Molecules, Cleric, Imperial Triumphant, and more – has joined the Nefarious Industries family. To date, PAK has released six recordings on the labels Ra Sounds, Magaibutsu Japan, and Tzadik, with their newest full-length, Bestial, now set for impending release through Nefarious Industries. The album will see spring release while the band confirms concerts and tour dates across North America and Japan for the year.

PAK is back! With a new reincarnation combining powerful avant metal, the complexity of prog rock, and inspired moments of improvisation. For more than fifteen years of touring and recording, PAK’s music stands unique. Ron Anderson is back on guitar with a more powerful heavier sound. New members Steve Blanco (Imperial Triumphant) on bass and Larry Kwartowitz (Cleric) on drums are helping in stretching the bands previous boundaries pushing PAK to new sonic directions.

There he started working in his home recording studio and continued to experiment with tape editing, found sounds, noise, and improvisation. He combined these elements with compositions and released his first LP entitled Fever Dream in 1987. Anderson moved to Oakland, California in 1989 were he formed The Molecules, who would go on to release a total of six albums. The Molecules were introduced to the European music community at the Musique Action Festival in Nancy, France in 1993, and since then, Anderson has been a regular on the European festival and club circuit, as well as touring in Japan and North America. He is well versed in many styles of music ranging from jazz to metal to ambient and beyond. ZVI: Two-Song Single Including Portishead Cover Streaming Exclusively At PopMatters Ahead Of Friday’s Release Through Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

Zvi - photo by Justina Villanueva

New York City’s ZVI – the eclectic solo project of Ron Varod from Kayo Dot, Sabbath Assembly, Psalm Zero, So Is The Tongue, and more – presents a special two-song single through Nefarious Industries. Both new tracks, including the A-side original track “Dear Pink” as well as the B-side special cover of Portishead’s “Undenied,” are now streaming exclusively at PopMatters ahead of the single’s release this Friday. The single precedes ZVI’s new LP which is also nearing release in the weeks ahead.

While previous ZVI material can be interpreted as a minimal experimental drone twist on the traditional singer/songwriter, 2019 ushers in a new era of experimentation with the Deer Pink LP. In collaboration with producer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Anna Von Hausswolff, Boris), Varod’s third full-length ZVI offering as well as its precursory “Dear Pink” b/w “Undenied” single introduce psychedelic analog synths and warped drum machines while almost flirting with pop melodies and forms.

ZVI’s “Dear Pink” track was engineered, produced, and mixed by Randall Dunn who also helped with sound design of the track, with bass from guest musician Toby Driver (Kayo Dot, Maudlin Of The Well, Secret Chiefs 3). On the single’s flip side, the cover of Portishead’s “Undenied” was performed, recorded, and mixed by Varod himself at home. The tracks were mastered by Brian Pyle, and the package created with cover art by Paul Cristina, photography by Justina Villanueva, and layout by Greg Meisenberg.

Varod offers of the material on this special single, “In the summer of 2015 I wrote the guitar at my old Brooklyn rehearsal space and hummed wordless melody into my phone that came to me on my walk back home and didn’t touch it for a long time. Everything from that one session stuck in my head over the course of the next year or so of touring. It became somewhat of a jump off point for when I got home and buckled down and started putting together this record. I performed all the vocals, guitar, synth and did all the drum programming but this track also features Randall Dunn on Buchla as well as Kayo Dot bandmate Toby Driver on bass guitar. The Portishead cover on the B-Side was something I had opened a lot of my shows with while touring my last record and decided to do a home recording of just to document it.”

PopMatters is hosting an exclusive early stream of the single, noting, “’Dear Pink’ builds slowly, moving us from passages that threaten to fade into silence to others that are deeply emotional, cathartic. Guitars buzz and chime, electronic glitches flicker throughout, and the percussion provides the faintest heartbeat against an enigmatic vocal line slow to reveal its secrets. ZVI offers up an intriguing and appropriately dark ‘Undenied’ that’s one part darkened prayer, one part invocation of the muse.”

Stream ZVI’s “Dear Pink” and cover of Portishead’s “Undenied” exclusively at PopMatters RIGHT HERE.

Nefarious Industries will release ZVI’s “Dear Pink” b/w “Undenied” 7” single this Friday, February 22nd in a limited run of 100 copies on pink vinyl. Find preorders at Bandcamp HERE and the label webshop HERE.

Watch for the full details on ZVI’s Deer Pink full-length to be announced in the days ahead.

Varod is booking tour dates in support of the upcoming ZVI releases, leading with a one-off gig with comrades East Of The Wall in Long Branch, New Jersey on February 27th. April sees him crossing the country for a trek through Southern California with four shows April 4th through 7th alongside Jerkagram, followed immediately by a three-date Pacific Northwest run April 11th through 13th with To End It All and Xiphoid Dementia. Watch for additional tour dates to be announced.

4/13/2019 Azoth – Portland, OR w/ To End It All, Xiphoid Dementia, Caustic Touch [info]

Slowly taking shape over the course of a few scarce live outings and recordings dating back to 2004, ZVI’s self-titled debut was finally released in 2014. Death Stops Us All followed in 2016, featuring guest vocalist Alan Dubin (Khanate, Gnaw), engineer Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice), and the mastering talents of James Plotkin (Khanate) to better capture Varod’s expansive sonic palate.

The past several years have seen ZVI embark on several tours throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe opening for acts such as The Black Queen, Mouth Of The Architect, Jonah Matranga (Far, etc.), and Telefon Tel Aviv, as well as a slot on the 2018 Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands alongside Converge, Godflesh, Zola Jesus, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

ZEVIOUS: BrooklynVegan Premieres “Ritual Based Symmetries” Video From NYC Avant-Metal Trio; Lowlands LP Out Now On Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

Zevious -photo by Justina Villanueva[photos by Justina Villanueva]

BrooklynVegan is hosting the public premiere of “Ritual Based Symmetries,” the new official video from New York City-based instrumental avant-metal trio, ZEVIOUS, formed by members of Dysrhythmia, Sabbath Assembly, Many Arms, Smother Party, and more. The track is found on the band’s recently-released fourth album, Lowlands, which saw release last summer through Nefarious Industries.

Recorded at Menegroth, The Thousand Caves by Colin Marston (Behold… The Arctopus, Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, Krallice), Lowlands offers a subtle change in direction from ZEVIOUS‘ prior releases. The band explores a hypnotic and streamlined rhythmic approach while maintaining their abrasive edge, with influences ranging from new-wave and 20th Century composition to doom and black metal.

The first official video from Lowlands comes in the form of the album’s dynamic “Ritual Based Symmetries,” the shortest and arguably the densest track on Lowlands. Filmed throughout New York City and its suburbs, the video was directed by David Brenner, and attempts to capture ZEVIOUS’ dizzying instrumental delivery of the track and the colors of Lowlands’ cover artwork created by Bryan Olson (S U R V I V E, Cave Of Swimmers).

The video for “Ritual Based Symmetries” sees its public debut through BrooklynVegan who offers, “it’s got a mind-melting, psychedelic vibe to it that fits perfectly with the spastic song.”

See ZEVIOUS’ “Ritual Based Symmetries” at BrooklynVegan RIGHT HERE.

Lowlands is out now through Nefarious Industries on LP and all digital outlets via Nefarious Industries. Place orders at the label webshop HERE and via Bandcamp HERE.

ZEVIOUS is booking new live performances in support of Lowlands, including a show in New Haven, Connecticut on January 19th, with additional shows throughout the Northeast to be announced in the coming weeks.

ZEVIOUS: Lowlands – Progarchives

“The instrumental trio are still pushing that garage, metal, new wave underground mentality, but bringing that into line with fusion, jazz, RIO, doom, post rock and even trance to create something that is incredibly intense and powerful. It is as subtle as a sledgehammer, and really can cause headaches, but is also melodramatic and alluring. It is music which is compelling, bringing the listener in, shutting the door, and then bombarding them with sounds that feel almost as if they are part of a waterboarding experiment, yet even though the door is unlocked there is no desire to walk back out again. This isn’t easy music to listen to, but by giving it the time it deserves the listener comes away having had an amazing experience.” – Progarchives

ZEVIOUS: MetalSucks Streams Lowlands Album By New York City Instrumental Avant-Metal Trio; LP Out Friday Through Nefarious Industries – Earsplit Compound

Zevious -photo by Justina Villanueva[photo by Justina Villanueva]

MetalSucks is now streaming the entire fourth LP by New York City-based trio ZEVIOUSLowlands, ahead of the album’s release through Nefarious Industries this Friday. The band, formed by a trio of musicians who also play in in Dysrhythmia, Sabbath Assembly, Many Arms, Smother Party, and more, has also announced a hometown record release show for the album for September 7th.

Lowlands marks ZEVIOUS‘ first effort for Nefarious Industries and offers a subtle change in direction from their previous two releases. On Lowlands, the band explores a hypnotic and more streamlined rhythmic approach while maintaining their abrasive edge with influences ranging from new-wave and 20th century composition to doom and black metal.

With their early stream of ZEVIOUS‘ new LP MetalSucks offers in part, “the band continues to blur the lines between prog, jazz, and metal to create something likely to appeal to all fans of forward-thinking music, regardless of the genre. At no point does the band achieve, say, a Psyopus-level of heaviness, but they’ve definitely got the mathcore gene for resisting conformity in favor of bravely exploring uncharted territory. Put more succinctly: you really need to check out Lowlands.”

Lowlands sees release on 12” vinyl and all digital outlets via Nefarious Industries this Friday, August 17th. Find preorders at the label webshop HERE and via Bandcamp HERE.

ZEVIOUS has also booked their first live show in support of Lowlands with a release party for the LP scheduled for September 7th in Brooklyn, with Cleric and Mick Barr also on the bill. Watch for additional live dates to be announced in the weeks ahead.

ZEVIOUS Live:
9/07/2018 Ceremony – Brooklyn, NY *LP release show w/ Cleric, Mick Barr

Since forming in 2007, Mike Eber (Smother Party), Jeff Eber (Dysrhythmia), and Johnny DeBlase (Sabbath Assembly, Many Arms) have sought to blur the lines between prog, jazz, and metal as ZEVIOUS. The band released their self-titled debut in 2008 which featured a more traditional acoustic sound and hinted at the compositional style the band was beginning to develop.

In 2013 ZEVIOUSreleased their second record for Cuneiform, Passing Through The Wall, an even more aggressive realization of their trademark polymetric style. After a fruitful US tour with Dysrhythmia in late 2013, the band worked feverishly on a new batch of material while playing more on the NYC metal scene with acts such as Behold…The Arctopus, Krallice, Ocrilim, Child Abuse, Cellular Chaos, and others.

ZEVIOUS: “Ritual Based Symmetries” Streaming At Metal Injection; Lowlands LP By NYC Act With Members Of Dysrhythmia And Sabbath Assembly Nears Nefarious Industries Release – Earsplit Compound

Zevious - photo by Justina Villanueva[photo by Justina Villanueva]

New York City-based trio ZEVIOUS — featuring members of Dysrhythmia, Sabbath Assembly, Many Arms, Smother Party, and others – presents “Ritual Based Symmetries,” the new single from their impending fourth LP, Lowlands, pending August release through Nefarious Industries. The track has been issued through a premiere at Metal Injection.

The band states, “’Ritual Based Symmetries’ marked a shift in our writing approach and direction for this album. Although, as usual, this one took a while to learn and ingrain, the song is aiming for a sort of simplicity and relative melodicism compared to the other tracks. That being said, we still want the song to hit hard so we tend to bring an aggressive energy to the performances.”

Metal Injection calls the track, “atmospheric, completely devastating and very well-recorded instrumental metal.”

Stream “Ritual Based Symmetries” by ZEVIOUS through Metal Injection at THIS LOCATION.

Lowlands will see vinyl and digital release via Nefarious Industries on August 17th. Find preorders at the label webshop HERE and via Bandcamp where “Smear Campaign” is streaming HERE.

Watch for additional previews of the album, live actions in support of the album, and more to be released in the weeks ahead.

AMN Reviews: ZEVIOUS “Lowlands”

“New York’s ZEVIOUS is back with their fourth full-length album, Lowlands, scheduled for release on August 17. Not unlike on their previous efforts, this guitar / bass / drums instrumental power trio lands somewhere between math rock, prog, and metal, with a few hints of minimalist classical and jazz along the way. […] King Crimson, Sonic Youth, Ruins, late-era Present, and Ahleuchatistas are some good starting points for comparisons. But ZEVIOUS is their own animal, and Lowlands is more than worth checking out for that reason alone.” – Avant Music News

Review: ZEVIOUS Lowlands – Overdrive Music Magazine

“Dense and dissonant, New York trio ZEVIOUS’ fourth album is discordant jazz fusion for metalheads, but maybe not vice versa. “Upon hearing the record for the first time, the likes of King Crimson and Fugazi raced through my brain and, upon reading the band’s background, the jazz influence makes a good degree of sense. Nonetheless, Lowlands, for me, has more in common with the awesome no-wave and art rock bands that Martin Bisi nurtured in his studio than with Davis or Coltrane. […] Lowlands is a fascinating journey across a musical landscape so mottled with influences that, if it were to be rendered as a piece of art, it would be a Dali painting. […] Lowlands is one of those rare records that you can listen to a million times and you’ll always hear something new within. Without vocals to lead the listener to a particular place, instrumental music has the ability to stimulate the senses and ZEVIOUS make a perfect case for this. Exceptionally talented, they never allow their proficiency to overshadow the importance of the song and, as a result, Lowlands feels spontaneous and alive with possibility. The beautiful vinyl pressing, with Bryan Olson’s stunning artwork, is the icing on the cake – this is an exceptional piece of work in whatever format you discover it. 10.” – SonicAbuse

Decibel Magazine premieres “Smear Campaign,” the first single from Lowlands, the fourth LP from New York City-based ZEVIOUS. The band, featuring members of Dysrhythmia, Sabbath Assembly, Many Arms, Smother Party, and others, will release the album through Nefarious Industries in August.

“’Smear Campaign’ was one of the most challenging songs to develop for this album,” the members of ZEVIOUS issue of the track. “Whenever we play this one, we feel like there are a lot of opportunities for the song to derail. When we got into the studio, we felt like it finally clicked, and all the parts came together. We poured a ton of energy into the performance and the song seemed to come alive in a way it hadn’t before.”

Decibel states of the song, “For the uninitiated, ZEVIOUS contains members of Dysrhythmia, Sabbath Assembly, Many Arms, Smother Party and other out-there acts, playing off-kilter instrumental music combining elements of jazz, metal, and prog. Their 2013 album, Through The Wall, is a total mindfucker and Lowlands promises to do the same, albeit in a more streamlined way.”

Lowlands will see vinyl and digital release via Nefarious Industries on August 17th; find preorders at the label webshop HERE and via Bandcamp HERE. Watch for additional previews of the album, live actions in support of the album, and more to be released in the weeks ahead.
